In Michigan the dealers can only charge $210 document fee. Florida has to make up revenue from not having a state income tax.

It's a profit grab for the dealer, so I am not sure how that has anything remotely to do with the lack of state income tax.

Furthermore, not all dealers charge doc fees. Some explicitly advertise that they do not.

It is nothing to do with the state taxes. The dealer imposes it strictly to boost profits. The typical lie is that it is to cover handling paperwork. The time that a title clerk spends on any single transaction does not cost the dealer hundreds of dollars, especially when the clerk is using computerized forms.

So it makes you wonder if the state is not getting a kick back because they are not putting a stop to it are they.

No kickback to the government, but the dealer associations have well paid lobbyists.
