We will be flying in for a quick family trip mid-May and even though the majority of the time will be spent in Orlando (at a Disney resort) my wife and I discussed the option of doing a quick beach day the morning our flight arrives. Our flight will be arriving fairly early (7:25am I believe) so we'll have most of the day available to visit a beach before we need to check into our resort later that afternoon (in Orlando). A few years back we visited Indian Rocks beach and enjoyed it. I'm wondering if there would be any beaches closer to the airport which would still be nice and enjoyable for our family to visit the morning we fly in?

Unfortunately there aren’t any good beaches close to the airport. (There are a few nearby beaches on the bay, but they’re not very good.) My personal favorite is the Pass-a-Grille section of St. Pete Beach so that’s where I’d recommend visiting.

When my husband and I stayed by the airport, we visited Cypress Pointe Park which is on the bay. It’s very beautiful and peaceful and we enjoyed it.

Well, while it isn't on the Gulf, there IS Ben Davis Beach right by the airport off of 60 (Causeway). If you don't feel like driving 30-45 minutes, it can be a decent option. You can rent bikes and ride up and down the causeway (very scenic) and also rent kayaks...
And... You are very likely to see dolphins.

Thanks everyone. Depending on if our flight gets in on time we may venture out further back to Indiana Rocks (or another similar location) so feel free to recommend other beaches in the area. They probably need to be 45 mins or less away though.

An easy drive 45 minutes due west on SR60 from TPA puts you on Clearwater Beach which is stunningly beautiful with cool (not hot!) white sand and plenty of dining options too. Check out the Salty Crab for lunch, I highly recommend the Grouper Sandwich or Coconut Shrimp, both are fresh and locally sourced. https://saltycrabnorthbeach.com/

Courtney Campbell Causeway is not far from the airport. It has some beach-like areas.

Honeymoon Island State Park is a nice break from the too touristy beach of Clearwater about same distance drive. $8 to enter but plenty of parking and less crowd if not weekends. Seems like too short a time to relax at the beach before driving couple hours to Orlando tho.

Honeymoon Island is my go-to, as I live 10 minutes from there, but while it may take 45 minutes to get there from the airport, getting through the gate can take forever… Last time I went, between the drawbridge being up on the causeway and the extremely long queue to get through the gate, it took me about an hour to get in. So… it might just take you almost 2 hours total just to get to the beach… I now bike there instead.
