I just realized that the team is officially Rays now
Why?
Was Devil in the name too disturbing to some people?

Some people didn't like the "Devil" in the name, there were a few complaints but that's not the reason why they changed it. New Owners took over recently and thought the name to be corny (which it kinda was) so they wanted a change. Also with new uniforms and colors and most likely a new stadium coming the team changed the name too. Now they are the Rays as in Sun Rays (shown in one of their logos) and also the fish (their now secondary logo).

I follow the team, and personally I think "Tampa Bay Rays" sounds plain and terrible. Bring back the Devil Rays. They were always called the Rays for short. They can keep the new uniforms with the Devil Rays name.

I didn't think Devil Rays sounded corny at all, it sounded cool and original.

The Rays sounds very plain and just doesn't roll off the tongue the way Devil Rays did. By the way I hope you guys take the A.L. East this year.

Talking I Like It!

I for one am a Rays fan and I like (nay, LOVE) the new branding. It's wonderful to be at a game and see all of the fans in their NEW Rays gear! It has a fresh and youthful feel to it... much like our AWESOME team!

PS Please vote for Evan to be named Clutch Player of the Month!

I say we start a petition to change the name back to Devil Rays. They can keep the same uniforms they are using now. After all, the old grren uniforms said only "Rays" on the front. Also, the sunburst logo wouldn't look bad because other teams have different regional symbols in their logos and uniforms.

Part of the name change was Stu and Company, better known as the 3 big businessmen that are trying to dupe us into building them a new stadium, somehow felt that changing the name would somehow coincide with the team starting to have winning seasons. This, in effect, would give the illusion that the now successful "Rays" have totally distanced themselves from those perrenial losers known as the "Devil Rays." It is nothing more than a ploy to make more $$$$$$$. By the way, IMO the stadium they play in now is great. I love going out there!

Default Well...

I agree, I love going to the Trop myself... it's a wonderful respite on a hot summer's day. BUT... baseball, and professional sports in general, has (for whatever reason) moved beyond "fandom" and has become a major economic driver. The City of St. Pete would do well to have a contemporary stadium on the waterfront that feels more "outdoorsy". It would certainly be the crown jewel of a up-and-coming downtown area. I just want our guys to play well now and into the future, and if a new stadium is part of that equation, so be it.

Whenever I talk to "northerners" (I used to be one, you know) about what it feels like to see a Bucs game at RayJay... they don't believe me until they go. Being a past Bengals season ticket holder... give me RayJay and a party on the pirate ship anyday. Maybe the new Rays stadium will be the same way. Only Florida can do it the way Florida do!
