I am a 24 year old professional possibly moving to Tampa in the next few months and am in need of some advice. My girlfriend and I are willing to pay a decent amount of rent for a nice place. Were torn between living close to the beaches and living in a more urban environment. We both like to go out a lot but also enjoy "non-chain" food.

I am not worried about a commute as I travel a lot and can work from home when i'm not on the road. Also, we really don't care where we live as long is its a cool place and within an hour and a half from the Tampa airport.

What do yo think?

P.S. I want the water

Live in South Tampa areas(you can live on the water or with water views on Harbour Island, Davis Islands, Bayshore Blvd areas, or even Westshore Blvd areas), but there is plenty to do, lots of mom and pop and outstanding restaurants and nightlife, very nice small neighborhoods...Gulf beaches are about 30-40 minutes.

Or you could live in downtown St. Pete, another lively area with great nightlife and restaurants on the Bay..Gulf Beaches are about 15-20 minutes.

Yeah I would second the St. Pete vote.

Downtown is right on the water and there are concerts in Vinoy park (saw BB King there) which is right on the water. Their annual celebrations include a Fourth of July party, jazz concerts, Ribfest in November, Starfest in May and Taste of Pinellas in June.

Also St. Pete has the coolest intimate venue for national music acts... Jannus Landing. It's like an outdoor courtyard between buildings with a stage. We saw Tower of Power there, such a neat venue. They have an outdoor BBQ going and drinks available at the bar. Grab some BBQ, a beer and sit under a tree while enjoying awesome music. Love it! There are other bars with live music as well.

Also many little restaurants and shops along the main street. I think there are things going on during weekend as well, maybe someone can expand on that who lives closer.

If I could turn the clock back 25 years, I would definitely move into that condo on Sand Key in Clearwater. It's a magical place IMO.

If you like the "non-chain" urban environment you might want to concentrate on downtown Tampa/Channelside or St. Pete downtown.

Creative Loafing did a good set of articles of different areas and restaurants, check out Creative Loafing Tampa | Special Sections | Urban Explorer's Handbook 2008 | Urban Explorer's Handbook 2008

Good luck
