Hi, I was wondering if getting a scooter would be a good idea to get around St. Petersburg. I visited and saw many scooters around. Is traffic safe enough for a scooter? Is there anything else I should know, good or bad, about getting a scooter there?

You will be fine just make sure to WEAR GEAR! I see people all the time in tampa riding around on scooters in their t-shirts, shorts, and flip flops. Road rash and busted head is not fun especially if you live to tell about it.

If you are not a defensive driver...riding a scooter will make you one in a very short time........as with any bike...you have to keep your eyes on the road...at all times...not only do you have to watch the other vehicles you share the road with....you have to be aware of what might be on the ground in front of you...especially on turns...for oil spots, sand and gravel are your worst enemy......a vehicle with 4 tires can take a turn and not loose control...but on two wheels...especially if the vehicle in front of you is kicking up sand/gravel/etc...you could easily loose control......

So...when you buy your scooter...make sure you buy all the safety equipment with it...helmet/googles/wind screen/etc...and drive defensively...but if you don't...make sure you have your DONOR CARD filled out....and carry it all the time.....

I had always heard the Tampa/St. Petersburg area ranked at the very bottom of the list in safety for walkers and bicyclists. I wish I could find the ranking online, but can't right now. I don't know if we just have bad drivers or a lot of walkers/cyclists.

Even my husband was run off the road on Bayshore in Tampa as he rode his bicycle. He headed for the bushes and was OK.

So, the advice to drive defensively and wear protective gear is worth following. I believe the cities are trying to make the areas more pedestrian/bicycle friendly, though (I hope!)

Read the newspaper or just drive around each day, and you'll see the whole Tampa Bay area is ripe with motorcycle related deaths. The combination of congested roads, elderly drivers with no depth perception, and people from other states unfamiliar with basic rules of the road make this area extremely dangerous for anyone on two wheels- motorized or not. Every day I drive, I see at least one close call involving a motorbiker and a car/truck. Not very two-wheel friendly around here.
