Palmetto's prefer warm surroundings. I tell ya, I when I first moved to FL I threw a shoe at one.

I think you may be an exception to the rule. Most people living in FL, or other places along the Gulf Coast have plenty of experience with Palmetto bugs.
I primarily came across them outside, but sometimes I would find one in the house, usually when the ground was very wet or very cold. I think that's a typical experience for lot of people there.
It doesn't help to live in a older house that is not very well sealed. I can also say I've seen the buggers race me into the house when I open the front door after coming home from work in the evening. Guess the bushes by the front door weren't warm enough for them sometimes...

Buy the big roach traps and spead them around. I've found they are very effective.
