I think you may be an exception to the rule. Most people living in FL, or other places along the Gulf Coast have plenty of experience with Palmetto bugs.
I primarily came across them outside, but sometimes I would find one in the house, usually when the ground was very wet or very cold. I think that's a typical experience for lot of people there.
It doesn't help to live in a older house that is not very well sealed. I can also say I've seen the buggers race me into the house when I open the front door after coming home from work in the evening.
Guess the bushes by the front door weren't warm enough for them sometimes...
