I''m concerned regarding the schools of Florida(tampa bay area and surrounding), it seems as though the quality of education for the public schools seems to be kind of questionable. Do you buy chance know of any private schools or charters school that you feel are great in providing quality education for students
I came from Omaha Public Schools and can tell you that the curriculum (sp?) there is much further along than here. I think there are several factors to this.

1. A high amount of immigrant students
2. General lack of respect/pride for the school by the students.
3. Teachers who feel they are fighting battles rather than teaching and as such, become burnt out.

I went to Largo High and can tell you that the place is a dump. The school is poorly maintained (hint; never step foot in a Largo High restroom) and there is virtually no sense of school pride. An overwhelming majority of the teachers are either just starting out or about to retire. Most good teachers in their prime flee for other schools. While there wasn't any real gang activity at Largo, there were definetly alot of troublemakers, fights and vandalism.

From my experience (both firsthand and otherwise) most of the public schools in this area are the same way. East Lake and Palm Harbor University are far and away the best high schools in this area. I took several extra curricular tests at PHU and attended sporting events at East Lake and would have MUCH rather attended those schools.

Unfortunately I'm not too up to speed on the private schools in the county. Maybe someone else will know more though.

With a few very small exceptions, both Clearwater and Largo are pretty safe all over. There are plenty of trashy/low class areas in both cities, but not really any place that I would fear for my safety. Gang activity in Pinellas County (excluding St. Pete) is pretty much nill.
