I live in Apollo Beach, but I'm only a few hundred yards from Ruskin city limits. The Ruskin area is generally run down, largely consisting of hispanic migrant workers, and lacks most any form of entertainment including dining options. Crime is not unusual, with petty thefts being most common.
There are some nice communities finding their way into the Southshore area, but the current housing decline has really slowed growth to a standstill.
From a strategic standpoint Ruskin is nice due to easy access to I-75 and being only a half hour from Tampa, Brandon, St. Pete, or Bradenton. I'd probably not move to Ruskin but steer toward the nearby Apollo Beach/Riverview area if your considering the Southshore.

I have family at Sun City Center in Ruskin, so I've driven through the area scores of times. Its an area with tomato harvesting, lots of migrant (Hispanic) workers - very poor, in my opinion. The town of Ruskin has very little - a few Mom and Pop diners, some very old drug stores and hardware stores. I think a K-mart just closed, and they used to recently have an actual operating drive-in movie theater. Bahia Beach - now called something else - is a small private beach and there's a marina there, too. Highway 41 (Tamiami Trail) runs through Ruskin - and probably was a bigger deal before the interstate (I-75) was around. Of course, Sun City Center is an extremely well run retirement center - Del Webb discovered the area. Evidentally he researched the hurricane trends in FLA and picked the Ruskin area because of that.

Well, I live in an area that is just north of Sun City Center and my address is considered Ruskin. It is a new development, and it is decent! It is right by the elementary school. The actual community of Ruskin is not beautiful, but other parts may be. I live within a 5 minute drive to Walmart and a grocery store, and a 10 minute drive to multiple little stores and grocery stores between Sun City Center and Riverview.
Do you have a home you're looking at, or juts wondering about the community in general?

I live in a new Community called "Cypress Creek". We are on Rt. 19 which runs between 301 & 75. It is a Ruskin address. There are a lot of new Communities going in in South Hillsborough Cts. Along 301 & also here on 19th. Ruskin is as previously stated just a small area along Rt. 41 which has a new Catholic Church, a nice Sweetbay Supermarket & not a lot more. It is very Hispanic & just a quit little very rural place. I kind a like that, but will be glad if we get a mall in Apollo Beach & some more restaurants. They finally built a few. We have Sonic, Village Inn, Applebee's. A small Spainish place called Ybor City Grill, a new Chickenwing place (I forget the name) & a few more. a year & a half ago we had NOTHING. I love my nice home in Cypress Creek, but we have problems here which are shared by A LOT of people now in this economy. Our Community was suppose to be 2000 homes & we got to around 200 when the economy went to hell. We now have a lot of empy lots & No AMINITIES which we were suppose to have a pool, club house & a lot of other stuff. We all are hoping & praying that things pick up as I think this could be a very nice place to live someday.
