I think the title is pretty much explainatory. People have said you can't get a job or place without a local address, yet how am I supposed to do this? I really don't understand. How am I supposed to get a local address if no one will talk to me long distance? Thanks!

Ok, well some may argue that what I am going to tell you is dishonest, but in this economy you have to do whatever you have to do to get a job. Go to Craigslist, grab any address from any for rent/ sale property, and use it as your address. I had to do that when I moved here, because my Orlando address wasnt getting any call backs.

Who are these "people"? I suppose it depends on the kind of job you're looking for but I've never heard of this being an issue. My wife and I both lined up our current jobs from 1500 miles away. If it really becomes an issue see about getting a PO Box in the area you're applying in.

I agree with getting a PO box. It does often make a difference especially if they have lots of applicants, unless your resume stands out they are going to go with locals

Jetlag, how did you go about your job search?

I've also been trying to find work from far away, however I just began the process about a week or so ago. I've read on a number of sites (Career Builder, Monster) that it is NOT a good idea to get a PO box, or to use a friends address. It can become a problem with the employer when they try to set up an interview, and you can't make it in the next day, etc.

I recently got a job about four hours from my previous address and the address thing never really posed a problem..

I did most of my searching through monster.com or company websites. I was up front about not being able to start right away and being new to the area. I had a couple of phone interviews and then, pending a drug test, had a job. During phone conversations I made it very obvious that I was really excited about moving to the area and working for them. I also listed a few extra references since the were unable to interview me in person.

What line of work are you in? I've registered with Monster - it seems like there are more postings there than with career builder, but I am registered there as well.
