I work internationally and am actually paying 4 state taxes for 2008.
Since it makes no difference to me where I keep my underwear, it might as well be a state with no income tax.

Your wording is incorrect. Your income taxes are based on where you ARE when you do the work. For example, people who commute to work in New York City from their homes in New Jersey must pay NY state income tax for the money they earned each hour they were present in New York state. But they do not have to pay New Jersey state income tax on that income. However, should they stay home one day a week and "work from home" that day then the income from that day's work is New Jersey taxable and not New York taxable.

Sometimes it gets more complicated than that (for example, business trips generally do not count, but sometimes they do), but that's the short version.

Why even keep a US residence at all? If you are out of country for most of the year you do not even have to pay federal income tax, much less state, on the first ~$88K. Keeping a US residence makes it a lot harder to claim that deduction though. US ex-pat tax law is pretty complex, I'd find a cpa who specializes in it.

you dont pay 4 state taxes for the entire year, only the portion you were a resident of that state for.

If I lived in NY for 4 months in 2011 and GA for 8 months in 2011 I would pay NY state income tax on my earnings during that 4 month time period and pay GA state income tax for my earnings the other 8 months and they would be filed separately. This is extremely common and no CPA would mess this up. it is so common that H&R blocks website and TurboTax have their programs set up so that you check a box and it pops up another state and you just fill in the information depicted on your W2 from your employer.

I have lived in NY, TX, SC, GA - I have had accountants file for me as well as file myself using software like turbo tax. I like to think I am up to speed on this topic.

The OP is trying to exaggerate to build support for his cause. Attempting to file in Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming is commonly attmepted. it is tax evasion CLEAR AS DAY and the IRS is aware of it and commonly looks for it. If you are not living in florida and paying taxes elsewhere (grocery stores, property, toll roads, vehicle registrations, etc) you are commiting a class D FELONY.

take this crap outta here. There may be other places that have members who will actively help you commit a federal crime.
