Weeki River, Redneck Riviera, tons of food/shopping along 19 and 50, free boat ramps, eagles, birds, a small airport, great gun club, bit over an hour from downtown Tampa, personal and commercial fishing ... what's not to like. OK, in the winter it clogs a bit with snowbirds, but really, in spite of it all that's good for Florida. Amazon has a lot of books

And there is more. Just East of Brooksville you will find a huge forest Withlacoochee)with a river, recreational area (ATV's, horse back, canoeing).

Further up 19 is Homasassa River for fishing, boating, manatee sighting. Don't forget camping of all styles, primitive to cabins. Out of Hernando Beach you can grab a fishing charter boat or rent your own.

Beaches? On the nature coast? Well, there is Pine Island on the Gulf.

We like Sand Key. Nice weekend getaway place.

Pine Island is great for hanging out on a inflatable pool chair, anchored 50 yards off the beach. The dolphins like to feed there at the tide change.
Usually a good show.

Problem with these tiny beaches their parking areas are usually full. so access is denied.

Last summer we had to wait for a spot. During the week no less! Waited about 10 minutes.

Now that the fees are up in Hernando parks, volume may be slightly decreased.

Still, nothing like Sand Key as far as not too far drive for us. Also Howard Park is nice.

I like that there are no big beaches up here because it means better flats fishing.
