We are planning to relocate to the Tampa area this summer. We are looking to rent a house in an area within 15 - 20 miles of downtown Tampa. Does anyone know of a housing community that has an olympic-size pool or lap pool (instead of a small kidney-shaped pool) so that we can swim laps?

The YMCA's usually have pools that you can swim laps. I live in Tampa Palms and the YMCA (on Compton Dr) has a large pool where people are swimming laps. I don't know if it is a true olympic size pool though. They open real early in the morning, I think 5:30 or 6:00 am. Tampa Palms on Compton Dr. also has a large pool associated with the community. Both are heated to around 80 to 85 degrees. The community pool does not have many people in it. I have seen people swim laps, though I don't recall painted lines or any ropes to show lanes.

I am not sure how far we are to downtown Tampa. Probably within the 15 - 20 miles you are looking for.
