So is it safe to say that many of the people aren't able to pay their taxes because of a lack of employment?

I simply can not understand why they don't try to collect the money owed from some of this commercial properties. The Safety Harbor Spa owes so much money, and they are doing business, as I can tell by my nearness to it.
The individual owners who have not been able to pay are another story.
I would go collecting from the really big amounts that have not been paying their taxes. Maybe from that exercise, the state could balance their budget??
Or am I dreaming??

Will this mean more taxes to pay next year to make up the difference by non-payers? Makes me wonder if buying a house in FLA is worth it.

I hope not, they can't justify raising them, this is why they are not being paid now! Well that and unemployment, foreclosure etc. We will just have to put up with a lowering of services.

They will be sold at the yearly auction so the county will collect immediately and some one else will hold the note and can make money on it.

This is going on for the last couple of years and the ones I know who haven't paid weren't people who lost their jobs....just felt entitled to buy a fancy car, fitness equipment, etc...all other items and than running into the mail near the end of the year that they have to pay prperty taxes...so to put it in 2 words...Irresponsible people.

We had people who thought they could get away with not paying their HOA fees...after getting interest added and a lien they never responded, but when the HOA started to put a lien on their home they still didn't react...well a letter stating their house would be auctiond soon with a date in there woke them up and all of a sudden they managed to pay as fast as possible to avoid losing their home...IMO some people are gambling and thinking they will get a bailout...when they notice that the HOA is serious...wake up call

Curious, buyers of foreclosures or short sales - are they responsible for any of the back taxes, HOA fees, etc.?

No they aren't. Buyers have to make sure they buy the home with a clean title and get title ins. which is normal in Fl., if a home as several liens (example HOA) and or unpaid mortgage and unpaid property taxes and the property tax note has been sold, that can delay the sale.

When you buy a home at an auction that is a different case...

I had neighbors who blew off their monthly townhome association dues for about a year. I came home one night to find all their belongings stacked on the lawn with a sheriff's notice taped on their door.
