Does anyone know what's up with all the hawks I'm seeing near the bayous? There has to be hundreds of them, circling and flying around near Weeden Isle, Snell Isle, Shore Acres, etc.
I didn't think they hung out in large groups; usually by themselves or in pairs. Is there something in the water (mullet maybe?) drawing them there?
It's pretty strange...

hmm? an omen?
we did have a little earth tremor a couple of years agoCOULD happen so if you feel the earth move, you'll have your answer. strange animal behavior is often a precursor.

Who knows. I'll have to see if I can get some pictures tomorrow. They're all over along the bayous and bridges. It's one of the weirdest things I've seen around here.

Wow, that's awesome! Hawks are generally seen around this time each year and through March. We're seeing them regularly in our Carrollwood area neighborhood now, but not in flocks. They are impressive birds, for sure. I look forward to seeing the pictures!

Do you know which type of hawk they are? Could they be Ospreys? I see a lot of those guys each week while fishing (they are also known as water hawks) but rarely do I see Red Tail or other hawks.

I would think Tony is right, Ospreys build a lot of nest near the bayside bridge. I have seen them near RayJ getting fish from a small lake across from the old Tampabay mall. Maybe it is mating season and they are just shaking their tail feathers.

I'm not sure what kind they were, but they seem to be gone (for now). I went out between 4 and 5pm Thursday and there were none to be seen. It's too bad I wasn't able to get some pictures. Someone may have been able to identify them.
Anyway, it was cool for a little while...

An interesting fact about Ospreys, when ppl wore feathers in hats and the like, Osprey feathers weren't used because they smelled of fish.
