In Apollo beach on surfside. Its nice for a hang out spot, but its small, and you cant swim. If you want to make a day of the beach, I would go to Clearwater.

Ft De Soto, America's top Beach for 2008, is consistently wonderful. The Official Fort DeSoto Park Home Page
Fort De Soto Park - Home Page
Rent bicycles or kayaks. Take the dog to the dog each. Fish off of one of the piers.
Leave home early, because after noon the Bayway is slammed with beach traffic.

My family just went to Ft. Desoto beach (north beach) while we were there a few weeks ago. We LOVED it! We went up to Clearwater beach (ehhh, it's pretty but too much the touristy type of beach) and then drove down along the coastal area all the way to Ft. Desoto. Ft. Desoto was hands down our favorite. Beautiful beach, Natural area, not touristy at all, lots of shells and sand dollars to be found, outdoor sand showers to rinse off under, restrooms had changing areas and showers. It seemed like it was popular with families and 'locals'.
Going into Clearwater was a madhouse. Took FOREVER. Not something I'd want to do again.

From Brandon, Clearwater would be closer but if you have time you have to check out Ft De Soto and or go down to Ana Maria or Siesta Keys.
All of them are awesome!
Also, if you get time run down to Venice Beach someday, also beautiful and shells you wont find anywhere else. I think it is called the shark tooth capital if I am not mistaken????
Since you are moving in 2 weeks you picked the perfect spot for some of Florida's best beaches.
Another awesome site you want to check out in the future is Sunset Beach Park, a small hidden gem in Tarpon Springs. Just a perfect place to enjoy the water, relax and have a nice picnic lunch.
2 weeks from being almost in Heaven, lucky you!
