visiting FLorida, we'd like to go to a beach nearby (Miami is too far away, sadly) and would appreciate any recommendations... we were considering St Pete....

The highest rated beach for the last two years is Fort Desoto Beach. But it's a good 2 hour drive for you. Here's the link; The Official Fort DeSoto Park Home Page We camp there, have Thanksgiving in their pavilions and the kids love the beach with it's white sand and lots of trees nearby for shade. lots of restrooms and showers. You'll love the balance of nature and water, and lack of turisty businesses. So don't forget to pack your picknic lunch - there's no where to get it there!

You could also go to St. Pete beach or Clearwater Beach. Get there early to find a parking place. Some have parking meters or you might find a parking lot. I like Pass-a-Grille because it is away from the all the tourist..

If you are a tourist and just visiting.....

Clearwater Beach @ Pier 60 is your best bet. Beautiful beach with close PAY parking. (Park all day for $10.00) After your sun and fun there are quite a few restaurants and hotels (walking distance?) in the area. Its a tourist area for a reason, people really like the area! Beaches are about 100 yards wide of sugary white sand, beach chairs and umbrellas can be rented. (If it is sunny it is a necessity for an umbrella!) (Remember the sunscreen!) The beach now has a (concrete) boardwalk and is a great place to walk in the surf or spend a few hours or a day. A great place to people watch as you can meet people from all over the world here, most on vacation, and all in a great mood.

Don't get me wrong.....

Ft. DeSoto Beach is an awesome beach, but that is all it is, a beach. If you want to go to a restaurant it will be at least a 4 mile drive out of the park to the nearest place to eat.

For a few hours or a day I would choose Clearwater Beach @ Pier 60.

Sorry to here about your cousin.

Most people in Orlando go to beaches on the 'Space Coast', Daytona Beach being the most well known tourist destination. Its virtually a straight shot on I-4. For a somewhat less touristy and quiet location, I suggest Melbourne beach, which is 10 miles or so, south, on highway 1.

Luck on your next vacation!
