Hello people,

I am moving to Tampa to attend Hillsborough Community College. From the satelitte photo it looks like a pretty desirable location. The college, a big park, and the mall right next door. Is this a good place to move to in that area. As in a safe area, but an area with enough life and young people where I can throw a party and not be hassled by the neighbors.

Also, it might be too much to ask, but I would like my car to not be broken into. Or my apartment for that matter.

I am moving from Orlando (Rosemont area) so I am used to living in a nice area with a lot of crime. But I would not like to live in a similar place in Tampa.

So is the area around HCC a good area to move to?

If not where would somewhere close be a good spot.

I wouldnt like to pay more than $1000 a month for rent.

Thanks, in a advance.

The neighborhood near HCC isn't the most desirable. It's filled with auto shops and porn stores, mixed among houses. The mall is hardly next door. It's separated by the airport. If you're thinking about being able to simply walk there, it really isn't a nice walk. The park, Al Lopez, is nice, though it can attract some pretty sketchy characters sometimes. It's closer than the mall, but probably won't be a nice walk when the sun's out.

As far as living there, HCC has some nice, new dorms. I really wouldn't live outside of there, in the real neighborhood.

Thank you for the reply. I won't be doing any walking though. Depending on my class schedule, I'll probably be making frequent trips to and from HCC back home a few times a day.

If I have to move a little further from HCC, I'm fine with that. But not too far.

Ferrett is right the housing around HCC is not any place I would live as it is pretty rundown.
For 1K a month you could rent a house or a real nice apt. There are some apts off of Dale Mabry and Columbus. My son lived there for a while and had no problems although he did say he was concerned because the gate was often broken. You can live in Carrollwood or S. Tampa area.. although I am not sure how wild parties will be accepted.

The apartments Keeper is talking about are called Arbor Ponds. They're behind the Kmart and Sweetbay. I have a friend that lives in there. It's pretty nice and I've never felt unsafe or threatened there. The gate is broken a lot, but last time I was there, it was fixed.

What about the student housing (Hawk's Landing - or something)? Surely the kids party a bit, but I doubt it's like Animal House. Who knows though...

I drive that route daily to and from my job and I wouldn't live anywhere near the college.

Perhaps you could find a small rental home off Himes Ave which would give you a fairly simple bicycle commute to the school. Stay away from the apts near KMart.

I would say look into the HCC student housing, Hawks Landing. It's directly next to the college, and prices seem reasonable. I would not live anywhere else in that area, it's pretty nasty. Tons of strip clubs, and porn shops, and very sketchy people walking around. Have you considered going to a different HCC campus? The Brandon one is really nice and you could find a reasonably priced apartment nearby that would be nice. Brandon has everything!

Before you move to Hawks Landing, do your due diligence. Some not-so-nice things just happened there recently, and the rating for the community is very poor.

Hawks Landing At Hillsborough Community College Apartment Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other Tampa apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com

there are nicer communities just a bus route away.
