Ok, don't get me wrong, I still do, by comparison with other cities we lived in (Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the worst Orlando) Tampa is a great choice, south Tampa has beautiful areas, and north Lutz, Land o Lakes...etc but it would be wrong to assume these other things don't exist because someone either didn't see them or didn't live here long enough............The USF campus is great indeed, surrounding areas of Fletcher/Florida Ave are not....80% of MLK blvd is well, crack town! sorry....I had to drive through it once and it freaked me out! sorry....I live north of Tampa luckily and don't have to be in those areas a lot...but they do exist, ..we do have mosquitoes, and the love bugs were invented at USF.........people do drive recklessly here (I don't know why)....just like in Fort Lauderdale or West Palm....

...........And I sure don't see anything that can be compared to Beverly Hills.....there are gorgeous properties around Ballast Point, Davis Islands, Bayshore Blvd, etc but that is not the rule...everything north looks the same, a ton of subdivisions all look a like....and the heat can't also be compared to the west coast because we have much higher humidity here.......I am being objective.....

I have been here as a tourist before and I know what it's like to see it from both sides.......and culturally (venues) are not as many as in DC or NYC.....I am not sure how you can argue that? after a while it does become boring since your choices are either the beach, football, night clubs or Disney and the other theme parks and all flat landscape...........if one can be satisfied with that forever and ever, great.....I am not. However, if I were to move somewhere else I would sure expect to learn the good and the bad about the area I am looking at.......because if I only hear the good things........I may end up highly disappointed because something that may be good for some may not be for us........so, I have to hear all sides, I wasn't trying to bash Tampa, only point out a few truths about the area.

The reason I made this thread is because before I went on my trip I saw so many negative posts about Tampa. Am I naive enough to think that there are rundown, dangerous places in Tampa? Of course not, but before I visited, this forum had me thinking that Tampa was just a horrible place to live. Even a few posts in this thread are negative, and it makes me wonder who the people behind these posts actually are. (Bitter, friendless people, I am sure.) I am just a normal guy sharing my experiences. Take it for what it's worth!

Oh, and I have been to Los Angeles, Phoenix, Minneapolis, New York City, and now Tampa/Orlando. (Not to mention, have seen plenty of episodes of Entourage, hahaha.) Enjoy being grumpy!

Kerplunk, I enjoyed reading your original post giving your perceptions of the area. So are you going to be a student at USF? I think a lot of times too many people just look for the bad in an area. Hope you enjoy your time here and have lots of fun (while getting a good education!)

Kerplunk~ I was very happy to read your post. I am moving to Tampa in 3 weeks. I visited the area twice in the past 2 months and have fallen in love with all it has to offer. Coming from a smaller midwestern town, Tampa boasts all of the things we are missing out on. I don't think some of the disgruntled people on here take into account how lucky they are to have something more to do than dinner and a movie for a date!! I will be 23 and found a place off of Bayshore Blvd and will be continuing with school at USF as well. I agree there are negatives about every area. So for those who keep pointing only those out, good luck in finding a place thats a pure utopia!!

Ooooooh, a place off Bayshore - you will love that! I think there is a great energy around there and it's one of my favorite areas of Tampa. Yes, if you are coming from a small midwestern town, you will love it here. Bottom line, different people like different things, and some people aren't happy with anything!

I am trying to figure that out right now. So far, all signs are pointing to "yes!" The only thing that worries me is USF parking. I know it's going to be bad... I don't mind walking, but I guess I have just always had a problem with parking, so what can you do, you know?

Hey, I am in the exact same situation as you. 23, midwestern city, transfer student, USF, etc. Are you cute?

This is absolutely true. People move to where I currently live and absolutely love it, but I can only think to myself: WHY? I guess we all want what we didn't grow up with.

Try Hawaii or the coast of Southern Ca with warm days, low humidity, and cool nights, and no life threatening lightning storms, and then come back and think this is perfect weather.

I bet they flew here from NJ and have never been anywhere else.

Anything other than this miserable cloudy, snowy, cold weather up here in NY IS PARADISE !!!

Parking - is there a USF shuttle from remote parking. Or bike (in the hot weather?). Used to have to do that at one of my school. Sucks. I remember that parking was very bad at USF.

Maybe he did not see too misquitos because they just sprayed this area recently. Last year I was bit only 3 - 4 times. This year I have already been biten 5 times. They go after me only when they are desperate. I mostly see spiders as I am walking my dog. They scurry into the grass as I walk by. You really won't see too many crawling on the walls.

I have never been to Beverly Hills, but going by what I imagine it would look like, I cannot imagine New Tampa being compared to Beverly Hills.

I haven't seen too many allegators during the summer. I wouldn't go swimming in a pond because even though you don't see them, they are in there.

The love bugs were awful this year. In the 4 years I am here, it is the worst I have seen. I had hundreds of them by my front door.

New Tampa is a regular subarban area. Some areas are nicer than others. Arbor Green is more upscale. Pebble Creek is more down to earth.

You will probably enjoy Tampa area. Other than the traffic and crazy drivers.

Good luck!

Most of the OP's "observations" seem questionable, at best. Memo to the OP--the particular music "mix" of Tampa is actually a Nationwide feature. You can thank the radio monopoly for that.

Tricked-out cars driving fast on the highways--again, this exists nationwide and is a product of reality television, MTV, "Fast and the Furious," take your pick of influences. If some dude spends a boatload of cash on his car, he probably is going to feel entitled to drive fast, eh?

Women are insecure and might be in a wife-beaterish relationship? Nice stereotyping there...
