S. Tampa is definitely where I would be looking if you want a walkable area. Do you have a $$ amt to buy or rent? That will also play into where you can afford to live. There is a synagogue in S. Tampa if you are interested but I never had anyone ask me where I went to church or what religion I was or invite me to their church.

Carrollwood is a very nice area too. If you live close to Dale Mabry you could walk to several strip malls. Westchase is also a walkable area with parks and some shopping in the area but a mall is just down the street.

That's an area with some well educated folks IMO But in reality anyone who gets all of their facts from Cable news is most likely misinformed at best.

@keeper We would be renting at first to ensure we wanted to live there long term. As far as rent price we'd like to stay under $1700 per month which I believe should not be a problem from the rental communities I found online(which looked pretty nice)

Thanks so much in advance!
Your wants above describe many areas in South Tampa, for example, the neighborhood Bayshore Beautiful which is bordered by Bayshore Blvd on the east, El Prado Blvd on the north, Himes Avenue on the West, and Gandy Blvd on the South. Publix, Target, Starbucks, Vietnamese, Thai, Italian, Sushi, BBQ, English, Chinese, Ice Cream(yum), etc....also Tampa's largest YMCA with City of Tampa park/tennis and Childrens playground/facilities. All within reasonable walking distance or within a mile from that neighborhood, lots of older homes, newer construction, large and small, mature oaks..unique/character. And thats just one of the many walkable South Tampa neighborhoods(i picked that one because you mentioned target).

Thanks Tampaguy03, you make a good argument for Tampa. At the present I'm slightly leaning towards Sarasota because I feel it might be a better place for small children. But only time will tell which city I decide on.

Perhaps we need to look further south in an area like Sarasota.

Have you looked at Hollywood? There's a beautiful and safe town square with blocks you can walk with sidewalk cafes and stores

Why not try Aventura, unless you need to be on the west coast of Florida for some reason.

Hollywood? that's in South Florida next to Fort Lauderdale............? Aventura also in South Florida!?

The OP was asking about "Walkable areas in Tampa"

Sarasota is an hour away from Tampa, Hollywood and Aventura about 4 1/2 hours away......

Yes, you are right. But the OP gave no indication that he is tied to the west coast of Florida. Seems like he gave up on Tampa pretty quickly in favor of Sarasota. Therefore, other area suggestions seemed appropriate. Also seems like he is not interested in hanging with right wing nutjobs. Since the three South Florida counties of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach are the only ones in Florida that consistently vote Democrat, it might be good for him. Also, Aventura has a high concentration of transplanted NYC Jews. Just trying to help.

Thanks for all the replies. I should have mentioned I am more interested in the west coast of Florida. I really want a good place to raise children and I feel that the South Florida area might not be ideal. Additionally, I'd prefer not to be in the path of every hurricane that comes off the horn of Africa.

I've heard good things about the Sarasota area for families, but I'm not counting out Tampa just yet:P
