My wife and I will be moving to Lakeland in the next 6 months. We have a 3 year old daughter also. I am looking for suggestions on which parts of Lakeland to consider. Schools will eventually be a concern, but not right away. I would prefer a newer neighborhood with a house price up to 200k. I would like an area with plenty of shopping and highway access. Feel free to give me your general opinions on Lakeland as well. Thank You.

Does anybody have names of specific developments to look in. I am not opposed to building new or buying something 10 years or newer. Thank you.

Generally stay south of the downtown area from Lake Morton southwards. The area north of I-4 around Lake Gibson is nice also. Stay away from Eaton Park, Crystal Lake, the Lakeland Regional Hospital area, Mid-town, west Lakeland (Wabash Ave area), anywhere along US-92 (Memorial Blvd), etc. To make it easier just don't live in East, West, or North Lakeland. These areas are ok to visit or drive through during the day but change drastically at night. Lakeland is really an overrated city in my opinion. Lots of crime and extreme poverty. The downtown is pretty nice but you have to pass through the run down poverty stricken areas to get to it. The city does have some really nice public parks though to enjoy hiking, wildlife viewing, biking, fishing, boating.

I'd look in the Lakeland Highlands area if I were you. It is close to the Polk Parkway for easy highway access and is a pretty nice area overall imho. Best of luck to you.

Here's a suggestion: Don't. It's a glorified bedroom community with no soul. Also for a small city it has a lot of crime.

While I can't specifically answer, go to the main Tampa Forum and click "Search this Forum" (it's on the right side of the page), then type Lakeland in the search box...you'll get 300 or so results. Lots of good posts particularly those by Gypsychic. Good luck!

I have always liked Lakeland and know people there that have been there their whole lives. There are some bad areas and the crime is mostly localized in them.

Look in the area south of Lake Hollingsworth off Cleveland Heights Blvd.

Everyone I know there never complains about having nothing to do.
Here is a link with some things going on.

Downtown Lakeland Florida - A Little Mecca of Cool

Not a big club scene, you will have to head to Tampa for that.
