Much of Tampa and South St.Pete looks like a slum but the appearance of the area can be a bit deceiving. By Florida standards, the Tampa area is much older than say Orlando, but typically has less crime. I'd be much more concerned with the commute into work and all the Tampa tailgaters/kamikazee style drivers(LOL).

West Tampa is not a safe area, but other than that area of town I feel completely safe any where else in the city.

The areas of Tampa that look the worst are the areas you drive through on the interstates - this corridor indeed looks bad. Of course that is just a small part of the city, all the neighborhoods Tampaguy03 listed are beautiful, and there are other nice parts even within the city core, like the renovated Tampa Heights, Seminole Heights, Riverside Heights, Forest Hills, Wellswood and Carrollwood to name a few. But I can see how someone who is just driving through would get the impression that much of Tampa looks slummy based on what they see from the Interstates.

My experience is more than just a drive down the interstates as I lived in Tampa + Brandon for a couple years. I like the Tampa area, there's a lot going on, but away from the beaches much of it looks seedy and dilapidated.

Hiya rogercobb - just so I know, besides East Tampa, and those areas off the interstates, please advise other areas of Tampa that look seedy and dilapidated.
Thanks!

First off, I will say that I enjoy South Tampa and the area near near Bayshore Blvd. + Westshore Blvd. is pretty nice. East Tampa looks trashy as does much of North Tampa up around the Bucs stadium, also along I-4 and north for a solid 5-6 miles. A lot of the homes look like prison cells with bars on many windows and broken glass. The roads in Tampa need a lot of improvement when compared with other areas of the state. I'll finish up by stating that I'm just as critical of where I live. There's good and bad in every city.

Where we live in Carrollwood is pretty slum free in my opinion, lots of trees and character in both the newer and older homes. It also feels pretty safe to me, I have not looked at the Carrollwood crime statistics but know there have never been any breakins in our neighborhood since it was built in 2005.

OK, just what I thought, seedy and dilapatated looking areas are around the Interstates, East Tampa area(east of Nebraska Ave and North of I-4), and the area around the Bucs stadium(Drew Park I assume)...thanks!! I was interested when you stated much of the area is seedy and dilapatated.
