How safe is the Tampa Bay area? (another LIST)
Accoring to Forbes, it is ranked 28th out of the largest MSA populations in the country in regards to having the lowest overall rates of violent crime, workplace deaths, fatal crashes and natural disasters.
Full List: America's Safest Cities - Forbes.com
Interesting - according to this 'list' Tampa Bay ranks overall safer than Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Nashville, and Houston among others....

NY is extremely safe. Thanks to former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. New York was a haven for crime in the 80s into the mid-late 90s. Now it is definitely one of the safest metro areas in the world. It has been really high on the list with the exception of 2001. The death toll was much higher that year, no explanation necessary.

Ditto CraigM.
NYC is so much better.
Rudy Giuliani is the reason for it.
42nd street used to be avoided at all costs; it was sleaze through and through. Now it's a tourist mecca. Same with lots of areas, and the subways are much safer now too.

What exactly did Giuliani do to solve the crime problem? I'm interested in how he made such a difference.

NYC is indeed a very safe city now. Guiliani was very good at taking all the credit for it. However, if one looks at the statistics, the decline in crime started BEFORE Giuliani took office. The trend continued under Giuliani. So I don't think Giuliani was the reason for it but he participated in making the city safer.

it had to do with more enforcement, and definitely more presense - even today if you are on the streets there is a police presense everywhere. especially at night, some of what was termed real bad areas now have cops every 2-4 blocks just as a reminder that NYC isn't taking the crap anymore.
When I visit I stay right in the time square area and have been out at all hours of the night- on foot - anywhere except I never go 'downtown' aka wall street etc. at night so I can't speak for that - however I have walked that island int he dark and I have never had any issue at all, I've never even been concerned. It is a complete difference from the way it used to be.

downtown manhattan is fairly quiet at night but it's actually very safe.....i live on the lower west side....not far from where the World Trade Center was...near City Hall, Wall Street area etc...It's a pretty low crime area, actually....even though it isn't as "bustling" at night as some other parts of manhattan.....
I was considering florida...but from these threads on Tampa Bay/Ft Lauderdale/West Palm...i get the impression that there are tons of ghetto like areas (lol).....
Is the Tampa Bay area much safer then Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach?

I would say that Tampa is safer than Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Please don't get the impression that this area is full of ghettos. There are some, but they are confined to South St. Petersburg and Central/East Tampa, both areas that can be easily avoided. On C-D forums, it seems that "ghetto" is often used as a synonym for "a neighborhood with poor people," which isn't really true. Sure, there are poor areas all over Hillsborough and Pinellas, but they're certainly not ghettos.
