It is possible if you don't mind the commuting time: it will be more like 1 and a half hours each way.

I too, think it will be almost one and a half hours due to the traffic. We live on north side of Sarasota in Manatee County, hubby drives to downtown Tampa each day - exactly one hour from here. So it will be way, way more from Longboat. Not something I would recommend.

netlease is on a distinguished road
the distance is pretty short, but the drive is brutal. I would not want to do it. You will average 25-30 mph getting out to a road that will take you anywhere.

If you really want to live on the water and commute to tampa, why not try the Pass-a-grille or Tiera Verde area in Pinellas? As the crow flies it is maybe 20 miles north of Longboat (no direct route by car obviously, b/c it is across the bay), but the commute is surprisingly easy (maybe the easiest beach to get to from Tampa). Wide lanes and Interstate 90% of the way. I go regularly and it takes me 40 minutes from Pass a Grille to downtown Tampa, 55 min in rush hour.
