So my family is moving to St. Petersburg, we are moving from Memphis, I hear about crime but realistically how bad could it actually be in comparison to where i'm moving from. Any recommendations on neighborhoods? Bradenton as a possibility? I have a four year old and 2 year old, looking for Catholic Schools as well. Any info would be great.

My wife is going to be working at Johns Hopkins, I believe that is in St. Petersburg. I am a teacher who will be looking for a job. We would probably have about a $2000 per month budget on either rent or a mortgage.

There are a lot of new apartment type higher rise places in relatively close to the Ped Med Center in and around the USF Campus. Not sure what the monthly rent is, but that whole area is very nice, livable with parks,walking/running paths, water front, restaurants, weekend markets, concerts in the park, nearby grocery (Publix). Dali Museum and FL Orchestra performs at the nearby Mahaffey. I'm thinking of places like this one.....sq ft of apartment home might not be up to your needs.

Only issue is that the Grand Prix is in March and can be a pain in the neck, especially if you have toddlers who might not like the noise of racing cars....

Really we would be wanting to rent a house or buy a house, I think really what i'm looking for is the reality vs myth of crime. Like I said, we are moving from Memphis... enough said, but I hear about "crime" in St. Petersburg, realistically how bad is crime there, compared to say Memphis, and also we would be willing to commute, is Bradenton an option. So, recommendations on neighborhoods? Bradenton as a possibility? How real is crime? Recommendations on Catholic schools, and recommendations on neighborhoods in St. Petersburg.

wish I could help, but I'm only familiar w/ the nicer parts of the STP area which is downtown and Vinoy North Shore areas....I don't think I'd want to commute over the Skyway to Bradenton twice a day for work, but thousands do....there are a lot of nice communities over in Bradenton -

might want to post a question over in the Bradenton-Sarasota subforum as well....

I live here in Tampa and visit St. Pete a lot. And I have been to Memphis. There are statistics about crime on this site but my general impression is that Memphis is much worse. There are many good neighborhoods and I believe your price range is good. Do not commute from Bradenton.

Most of the crime is in "Midtown", the area just south of downtown (I can't recall the exact boundaries. Just stay well away from that area. You are best off in downtown, north of downtown, or going further west toward beaches. St. Pete is not known for having good schools.

Bradenton/Manatee is an alternative if you don't mind the commute. It is pretty quick from many areas believe it or not. I live in south Manatee and we go to St. Pete all the time. My husband commutes from here to Tampa every day.

Good luck!

None of the area has good schools really. VERRYYY few places do. This is not a place to move your family at all. I dont care how much they want to pass the whole area from Sarasota to St Pete as a destination place. Every transplant who comes here will know soon enough about the realities of struggling down here in FL unless they live privileged and were able to get out of lifelong poverty. Once you're in it though, its hard getting out once the system and everyone in it has blacklisted you and in FL, they are great at keeping their racism quiet.
