I agree. considering there is no state income tax. some states pay state income tax, higher sales tax, higher property tax, etc.

I'm thinking the reason the City of Tampa doesn't repair South Tampa's streets is they're calling it traffic calming. (I hit a doozy on S. Himes tonight.) Or, maybe it's because all the asphalt has gone to Hills. County so they can pave Anderson Road for the nine millionth time. All this for the movie theatre, Starbucks, the Green Iguana and a few others.

You haven't seem bad streets until you've been to Philadelphia. Our streets are pretty third world. they don't repave, they patch...sometimes. I pay a city AND state tax for the privilege of pot-holed streets.
Consider yourselves lucky.

Well, to attempt to actually answer the OP's question, I think the roads in south Tampa are bad because of summer flooding problems which erodes the sandy roadbed and causes potholes. So they may be focusing on the stormwater system first because repaving now would be a waste of money and energy if the summer rains were just going to ruin them again.

Regarding Anderson Rd. - that is major traffic artery. They aren't repaving it because of the Green Iguana.

Potholes do function as pretty good speed bumps. Big Bend Road has come rough spots - and instead of going 70-75 mph, drivers actually go the speedlimit on the rough spots.

Tilli, as usual you have the balanced and logical answer. I totally agree with you. Down here in my neighborhood (Manatee County) they have been working on a utility project for 4 years. There are some roads in need of repaving here, but last year they finally repaved half of them after some of the utility work got done. I am sure the rest will be repaved when the project is finished. Probably the same for some of those south Tampa roads.

I'd lived in Tampa my whole life up until about a month ago. You guys/gals want to drive on some rough roads, come visit me in Baton Rouge! And I'm paying 9% sales tax!

I know this doesn't answer the OP's question - but I miss those Tampa roads right about now

Yep, often you don't realize how well you have it until you visit/live somewhere else.
