Just received this in a promotion from my automobile dealer:

Sometime between April 5 and 7, Ponce De Leon "discovered" Florida while searching for the Fountain of Youth. I'm sure his discovery was news to the Native Americans that lived in the area for over 12,000 years. The Spanish voyages of discovery lead to Florida being the first portion of the U.S. to be settled by Europeans. That makes Saint Augustine the oldest European settlement in North America.

Thank you everyone who has responded so far. This is great. I gave the thread link to my Union officials so they can get the information they need directly. I'm enjoying learning more about Tampa.

The first Hooters opended in Clearwater and Mons Venus was one of the best Gentlemen Clubs in the world. More Playboy models ( Hef's Magazine ) have posed than any other city in U.S. Tampa is famous for beautiful women of Florida right behind Miami. I should say 70s, 80s, 90s. Today, with America's obesity levels, not anymore.

Tampa has the only tri-lingual newspaper in the US, La Gaceta (English, Italian, Spanish).

The Columbia Restaurant is the oldest operating restaurant in Florida.

The Kenwood area of St. Pete has the largest collection of pre-war bungalows in the country.

St. Petersburg has the largest concentration of marine scientists in the Southeast. The greater Tampa Bay area has one of the largest concentrations of environmental professionals in the US.

Tampa was home to Santo Trafficante Jr., one of the most powerful mobsters in America.

Tampa's nickname used to be the Cigar City - it produced so many cigars it was the cigar capital of the world!

Here is a neat slideshow link showing the history of the cigar industry in Tampa:

Also, here is a link the the new Tampa Bay History Center - I haven't been yet, but want to go soon.

Unfortunately, there's only one factory left, J.C. Newman over on Columbus. They moved production of Hav-A-Tampas over to Puerto Rico.
