What state are you in? What is the going rate for a tutor?
I teach music privately. Depending on the instrument, I charge anywhere from $20 to $45 for a 45 minute lesson. I have a master's degree in music education.
Wow - while you are probably worth it, my girls wouldn't be learning piano if their piano teacher charged $45/lesson. It would cost me $360/month.....as a teacher myself, I just couldn't afford that. Now I feel doubly-blessed to have a wonderful piano teacher for about $130/month for 2 girls/weekly lessons.
I live in Georgia, and I don't know the going rate...hence the reason for the post
What part? When I tutored, I charged 30/hr in the beginning and moved up to 90/hr. I tutored in the Sandy Spring and Buckhead area, though. You can generally get away with higher rates in the East/North Cobb, North Fulton, North Atlanta areas.
WE PAY $35 for 45 minutes to our tutor. She assists one of our children with Math two times per week right after school.
From a parent perspective, I would be willing to pay even more because she spends extra time with him before exams, keeps in direct contact with his teacher regarding what is coming up and how he is doing, is flexible with times when needed and works with him after school, thus requiring no extra trip/travel from us.
I charge $25-$30 for math tutoring and I'm a certified teacher. I'd say $35 is on the higher end here in Texas and I haven't seen anyone who charges more than $40.
$30 for 45 minutes. I've taught for 17 years (B.S. in elementary ed. and a Masters in reading and literacy). That's on the very low end of what others charge in northern VA, but I am only tutoring one child right now for the summer and just picked it up by chance (elementary). We meet twice a week.
The ongoing average rate for private tutoring is $60 per hour. For tutoring companies in Houston like mine, the rates can range between $48-$75 per hour. I am the owner of a private tutoring company, so I keep up to date on current company and private tutoring rates.

Agree with that. $25-$25 here in San Antonio. We are not permitted to tutor students from our district for pay.
Now that thread is reopened I'll tell you about my area. It can vary dramatically depending on if you are on the wealthy or not so wealthy side of town.
I'm on the not so wealthy side of town and charge $25 to $35 an hour and most potential customers say that is "way too expensive". I knew several teachers in the medium part of town who charge $45 to $50 an hour.
I recently talked to a teacher who tutors on the wealthiest side of town who charges $90 an hour and has more clients than she can handle. She said that on that side of town parents are used to paying coaches (tennis coaches, private exercise coaches, golf coaches, etc) a lot of money so they do not hesitate to spend the money if their child needs a tutor.
