Does anyone know about job opportunities for special ed certified (with MsEd) in the Mississippi gulf (near Biloxi/Ocean Springs/ Pascagoula). I am currently employed as a sped teacher, but husband may transfer to Miss.

I wish I knew this beforehand. I would've gotten a provisional ESOL endorsement. I'm going to give working as a paraprofessional one more year, and if I still can't find a teaching job I am switching careers; when I was younger I wanted to be a paramedic.

Right now there are 9 ESOL teacher and 7 reading teacher positions advertised. I counted 14 positions for teachers in grades 1-6 and 5 kindergarten teacher openings. A lot of LD openings (20 or so) are still posted. My wife's school was just approved for an additional teacher, but I guess it's getting to be slim pickings as far as available applicants.

I've applied for all of them. I've been on over twenty interviews and I have nothing to show for it. Also a year from now I'll have my SPED coursework completed, so hopefully that'll work in my favor.

That depends on what you need. I have several single colleagues who do fine on a teacher's salary. I've been teaching for 27 years, and I will never break 50k. I've always been the primary earner in the family, and we still live paycheck-to-paycheck. So a family can live, but not comfortably. A single person might be just fine.

Is the salary teachers receive a big reason that Mississippi has such a poor education system? Not the sole reason but a big reason.

Sorry. What is it that you're certified to teach? Keep trying. Good luck!

I wouldn't call it a major reason. I don't think there is an adequate supply of quality teachers available at any price. Perhaps there is a pool of people who have chosen other careers but who would step into the classroom if they could support their families. But the attitude here is that teachers who want to live a middle-class lifestyle don't really care about the children. They want people who are willing to work for missionaries' wages. That does affect the supply, but a bigger problem is the gap between the achievement level of children entering kindergarten or first grade. (Kindergarten is not required.)

The local paper dedicated an entire section and the front page stories to the issue today:

Pre-K predicament: Standards rise as readiness gap widens
