Do they have the budget settled for next year already?

Our budget will be finalized on May 25. At that point we will know what our pay increases and resulting salaries will be for next year.

Our budget is never settled until the summer but I'll check the BOE website later on today.

Around this time, we start hearing if we will get raises or not and what is expected in the next budget.

Good luck.

It seems pay increases just don’t keep up with expenses. We did get our tax assessment on the house this week. It took another 4% jump and is up $50k over the past two years.

There's a little irony in your post. Here in South Dakota, over 80% of our property tax dollars go to the school districts. I don't know how this % compares to Virginia. One would think there would be some correlation between property tax increases and teacher pay raises. Granted, taxes going to the school districts are for a lot more than teacher salaries.

South Dakota actually added a half penny state sales tax a couple years ago primarily to go towards teacher salaries. Half of the taxes raised by this increase have to go each year specifically to pay raises. It was a good move pushed by our Governor. We WERE 51st in teacher pay at the time. Now we're somewhere around 42nd to 45th now. Still way down there, but a lot more competitive especially since our cost of living here is way below most of the country.

Interesting. I would think they would have to have the budget set before they issue contracts. So your contract doesn't state your salary?

Our COL, at least in my part of VA, is high, but we are a DC suburb.

I don't know what % of our property tax goes to the schools. The county also collects personal property tax. I do know that typically about 52% of the total county budget goes to the schools.

The superintendent presented a $2.9 billion Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Proposed Budget in January, with a focus on employee compensation. The FY 2019 Proposed Budget represents an increase of $118.7 million, or 4.3 percent, over the FY 2018 Approved Budget. They are trying to get our salary scales up to market scale average and have budgeted $53.1 million for market scale adjustments. An additional $43.9 million for step increases. It sounds good. We'll see if the county is able to meet the school district's budget request.

Your contract is printed with your current annual rate. Upon final adoption of the FY2019 budget your annual salary will be adjusted to reflect any Board approved increases.

...or decreases....

My district is STILL without a contract for this year. The teachers want the same raise the board gave themselves. How greedy of us.

No contract for next year.

While I will most likely stay where I am next year, I am applying for a job in a University. For the job I am applying for, an MA is all that is needed. I am not anticipating getting it, but I figure it is worth a shot.
