While our state has yet to approve charter schools, our local school system is already gearing up for the day it happens. Our district superintendent, has already revealed plans to certain groups in our city to convert very specific schools to charters. I would like to hear from teachers who have had this happen in their district. Specifically, I wanted to learn what happens to the staff in those schools that become charter. Do you lose your job, your tenure, your benefits? Thanks.
It all depends on how your state sets it up and what your district considers district employees vs. charter employees.
In my state, charter schools are affiliated through a district, but do not receive district funds only state money. The charter school needs to pay for everything with that state money: teachers salary, benefits, gas, electric, water, etc... That means that our local charter teachers are paid about 80-85% what public school teachers are.
