Given the state of the economy in our field, I wonder how many of you are considering moving to another state for the 2014-2015 school year. I know I am...obviously it is almost August and have no teaching job and 1 interview in another state. I feel so scared and don't even know if I have the economic means to relocate, but the alternative is to stick around here and sub. for wages below the poverty level. I'm 31, btw.
Located in Philly now. How about u??I feel like we need a support group!!
I did relocate in 2009. Stayed three years before NC became worse than MI and I was forced to return. If you are way ahead of the curve, and the new location stays solvent for 10-15 years, it will probably be a beneficial move.
I was in a similar situation last summer. I turned down a full time position because I didn't like that city it was in (too busy, housing was tough to find and rundown, far away from family, didn't know anybody there) and luckily was offered a full time position near my hometown a few days before school started (the summer of panic attacks). I had family not wanting me to move away, yet I had others telling me how difficult it was to find a teaching position and that I needed to jump on that opportunity. That's one of the most difficult decisions for beginning teachers- deciding whether to sub and hope that a full time position comes about or moving to a new city/town for a job. I would recommend just making sure that if you do relocate, make sure you're truly OK with your new surroundings. Sure, it's important to have a full time position but if you aren't happy with your location, it can really bring you down. Best of luck!
