From my experience, you can be the smartest, most qualified person in the world, but you won't get hired if you don't have direct connections with the school you're trying to get a job at.

When I applied, I submitted applications online and then hand-delivered an extra copy to each principal. It cost a lot of money and probably ended with the principals throwing away my info.

The only reason I got my job was because a higher-up admin told another principal to hire me. Are there any principals or admins that can vouch for you or even call the principal that will be hiring/interviewing?

I think you said you will be certified to teach English. There's probably not a lot available right now, but I know my district still has two open middle school positions open. There are quite a few ESOL and LD spots available.

Thank you. This is what I'm talking about. I'm looking for a company that might hire me based on their needs and my merit, not who I know but what I know and what I can bring to the table. I know, or at least I feel, like it's not much, but I do have a bit of experience with international students, and I love it. I know now that I didn't need to waste my time and money getting a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language in order to go overseas. I could have done that with just my English / Language Arts degree, but hopefully I can find a job that appreciates my extra preparation.

My next step would be to get a degree in Special Education or Reading Support. I don't want to work with profound cases, though.

Do you really believe your next step should be investing in another degree? Haven't you talked about the student loans you already have and will need to some day pay back? You are correct about experience. Many times you can be working on the additional certifications (not degrees) for special Ed and/or reading while actually working as a teacher, making money and perhaps in a district that also assists in the cost of classes.

You have mentioned seeing a counselor. I hope that is a cognitive based therapy, not just analysis. I suggest you talk with your therapist about setting goals. Take some small steps and set some goals of actually applying to school districts, programs. You need to take that first step.

There ARE teaching jobs out there even if you have a little baggage if you're willing to take some chances and actually pursue them. It may take relocation, but if this is the occupation that truly is the OP's calling, ditch the pity party and get busy living. Otherwise, I recommend pursuing a trade at many of the great technical institutes that are all over the country and not wasting anymore time and money in another degree.

Go abroad. Travel and explore while you're still physically capable, and earn money while you're at it.
