And don't blame anyone if you do take it. There are NO jobs anywhere in the country for college professors. Getting a PhD is a huge waste of time and money.
Obviously this is bull****.
Clearly there are many working professors at universities all over the country.
With that said, I do think a phd isn't the best choice for the OP. The OP would likely need a masters to teach k-12, but with all his or her experience should be able to provisionally get a license and from there go back to get a masters.
To answer some questions:
My native language is English.
I have taught English Language Arts and Literature in the past,
I have a Linguistics/Literature degree.
I have a few masters credits in Education (masters was in progress but on hold)
I have taught ESOL/EFL for over 10 years in Asia.
I have taught kindergarten, elementary, middle school, high school, post secondary and adults.
I need to get my foot in the door and get a job asap to support myself.
Relative in the US not able to support me for any measure of time.
I am middle aged and need to hit the ground running.
Thanks.
You have lots of experience in ESOL. Why not apply for ESOL/EFL jobs? Of course these will be more prevalent in states with lots of immigrants, and in major cities.

You can't be serious! Don't post on topics you know nothing about.
I was considering New Mexico... but they don't seem to have shortage areas.
Teaching openings are everywhere in NM, but here in western NM? There's schools with numerous openings NOW being filled by subs all year. IF they can get subs.
go to www.nmreap.net
There's a huge immigrant population in New Mexico and the OP has YEARS of experience teaching ESL. He should be able to find work there, I would think.

I am serious, and I know more about this topic than 99% of the world, because I have a PhD and work in a college. 70% of our courses are currently taught by adjuncts, not full-time professors. And that's an average. In some fields it's close to 100%.

You are 1000% correct.
Most people wouldn't understand and call "BS". They don't know. Many believe a PhD is the golden ticket to earning a high paying salary and a good job - whether it's in academia or industry.
That line of thinking is in line with "I'm gonna be so rich like Mark Zuckerberg when I move to the Silicon Valley and work for a high tech company."
No.
But, I understand you 1000%.
(Aside from waste of time and money, don't forget the emotional and psychological toll...)
