Hi I'm thinking I'd like to maybe work in the classroom as an aide or para but is there a difference? I was looking at an online aide certificate course, do you think that would be helpful? I'm just not too sure as what would be best and would greatly appreciate any thoughts.....😃 Thankyou.

Different districts use different terms. There is also a huge variation on requirements. In some places you must have a HS diploma and a class or two (maybe online classes would count), in other places you need a two year degree or two years of full time experience with children. Some districts require a college degree if you will be working in a classroom (not just as a "clerical aide" or playground supervisor). Some districts will only hire staff that are part time so they do not have to pay any benefits and other districts provide benefits such as group health insurance (of which you pay part of the premiums).

Salary is also all over the chart. Some district pay just above minimum wage and others pay $10 to $11 an hour. One district in my area starts at $13.50 an hour and goes up to about $16.50 an hour (with full time hours during the school year and full benefits). Needless to say, that district can hire the very best aides and many are licensed teachers who either want to work as an aide or are looking for a job.

Check with your local districts to get better information about your area.

Good luck.
