Hi,
I was hoping to get some input on whether its worth it to drop off a resume and letter of interest to individual schools in person regarding teaching positions. Some background on my situation( actually husbands) Hes a teacher in TX. Hes been teaching for ten years. We're looking to move to VA for family reasons. He's going to fly up for a job fair in February. Since we cant afford for him to fly up numerous times, we're hoping to make the most of this trip. Since we're open to numerous areas, should he go to other districts( individual schools) not included in the job fair and personally drop off a letter and resume while he's up there. This would mean taking an additional day off work which is not a big deal if its worthwhile. Any input is appreciated or any other ideas on how to make the most of this trip as far as getting an out of state teaching position is concerned. Thanks!!

If you are willing to consider the Northern Virginia area there are multiple large districts that hire.

Fairfax County
Prince William County
Manassas
Manassas Park
Alexandria City
Arlington County
Loudon County
Stafford County
Falls Church City
and, if all else fails, DC
There are also some other outlying communities but they have less struggle filling their vacancies.

He should fill out online applications, then once complete, call the HR departments explaining that he will be in the area on such and such days.

Good luck.

Thank you for your help! We're open to Northern Va. Though it wouldn't be our first choice simply because of proximity to family. He's definately going to apply online first. I just wasn't sure about going in to the individual schools. Its not really done very often here( Austin)But i couldn't see how it would hurt and I wanted to do everything possible to help him get an interview especially since we won't be up there much at all until we (hopefully) move.

I don't think it can hurt, but I think just as good might be a personal email to the principal of the schools that he is especially interested in.

He should also check to see if his Praxis score is good in Virginia.

I hadn't thought of that for some reason- thank you - that's a great idea especially with such limited time.

I'm gonna be honest- not sure what praxis is- or whether he had to take it in Texas at all. I did check that Texas was a reciprocal( not sure I said that right) state as far as getting his Va. license was concerned and with ten years teaching experience it looks like he's exempt from having to submit any assessment scores.

Agreed. And as a male eligible to teach in an elementary school he has a golden combo right there. Fairfax County is even having a special recruitment event for critical needs field (general ed 4-6 is one of them). Recruitment Services | Fairfax County Public Schools

If he has over 3 years fulltime teaching and a current out-of-state certification he doesn't need praxis scores.
