How much of an issue or if it is an issue at all would a school have with hiring someone to be a teacher if their in the Reserves/ National Guard? Yes I know there are laws against them not hiring you because of it but realistically how would that play out? Anyone have an idea or stories from their own experience or someone else's?

It was a point of pride in my school to have a member teaching there, even more so when he was called away to fight.

My husband taught and was a reservist,. He was able to schedule his AT for summer, and his deployments were all voluntary and after he left teaching. He was never deployed while teaching.

None of those things are guaranteed, though. And reservists do face employment discrimination, even though it's not legal, because it's typically impossible to prove (as with most employment discrimination).

This statement is true even in the Department of Defense, which if anyone, should be supportive. Amazing to me.

So what would be the best way to handle a situation such as this?

All the school districts I have worked in have been extremely supportive of Reservists. It should not be a problem for you.

Most likely they would hire a long term substitute to cover your leave.

Well as long as you'd get your job back that is what matters.

Brother in law of brother has been deployed 3x while a reservist and active middle school teacher. Always had a long term (certified in subject area) sub while he was away and was always honored for his service. Was able to do his other obligations during the summer, but served in Afghanistan conflict 3 different times in the past 10 years.
