It depends on my competence in the area. If I'm very competent, I do better on my own. If it's an area in which I'm not as skilled, group studying is helpful (with additional time spent studying on my own).

I was the person who explained things to the other people in my study group. I found that after explaining it to them I had a better understanding myself.
