I am actually calling it done by the end of this school year. I have moved from the classroom as an ESE teacher, Reading teacher, Behavior Specialist, Dean, Graduation Coach, at varying levels and realized that I just don't want to do it anymore. I am deeply saddened by the current state of affairs and I see the writing on the wall and although it has been almost 15 years enough is enough. I need piece of mind and staying in teacher is taking my peace and I deserve to take care of me more than taking care of anyone else. This is a case of finally putting myself first. I just know that I no longer enjoy what was my waking passion and it has turned into a constant form of anxiety. Best of luck to everyone.

Do you know what you are going to do?

The irony here is that we teach children to avoid making mistakes so they don't end up in jail...I am going to be a detention deputy..

We used to take one of our Senior elective classes, I don't remember what it was, maybe an Issues class, to tour the jail but had to stop because the kids started to see too many of their friends and relatives.

Quick story. I had one girl one year who was a 5th year Senior. She was an absolute master thief, would steal anything that wasn't nailed down. Anyway, she stole someone's cell phone one day and got caught.

The SRO arrested her and took her down to the jail for processing. Got there and drove right past the juvenile entrance. The girl went nuts, didn't know what was going on. Well she had to be taken and processed at the adult entrance because she'd turned 18 that day.

The SRO loved telling that story. It became real that day for the girl.

I also teach math, middle school math. True horror story here. I now teach a remedial math class for those several grade levels behind. Many of them hate math, have learning disabilities related to math, and typically half the students in my class have ADHD. So an administrator walks in today and asks the students to name one thing they learned in my class so far in the 3 weeks we've been at school. One student raises her hand and says she's learned that this has been her favorite class ever and she looks forward to coming to this class every day. Immediately, 4-5 other students (not everyone) nod their heads and say me too. Someone else mentioned something about learning decimals or something. So yeah, I think I'll probably keep teaching. Maybe I would find filing other people's taxes as life changing as teaching, but I seriously doubt it.

Cling to that joy.

I quit and we started a business and work a small fraction of the time that my teaching position required. We make roughly the same amount of money as my salary but have no benefits. Very low stress. My husband has a job with insurance so we are good.

I honestly didn’t realize how much, in both time and emotional currency, I was putting in until I stuck to my guns and retired from all association with education this year. In some ways I miss the “rush” but this is the first Autumn I have actually had time to truly appreciate the world around me.

By the way, welcome back.

Yes, I got very ill while I was still teaching. Life becoming pretty unbearable until I retired. I have not completely recovered, but at least I am not bed bound most days anymore. Stress does some rather peculiar things to your health.

And thanks. It's good to see familiar names still here.
