Don’t know why that would surprise anyone. With the regimentation of curriculum, scripted lessons, increased frequency of standardized testing, and all the emphasis being on test scores instead of the child’s development as a human being, this sadly seems like the logical next step.
I’m not saying the automatization of education is a good thing for children, as proven by the pandemic it is not, just that it is happening.

Presumably it's helping them save time, and they believe the exercise is already just pro forma anyways.
A lot of parents and students don't care about the feedback teachers give, and the teachers probably know who these families are.
In 13 years of teaching, it was RARE for a parent to ever ask for more feedback than the quarterly report card. Heck, it was tough getting parents in for conferences.
And, in 20 years of administration, I never heard even one parent complain to me about teachers not giving sufficient feedback.
For most parents -- at least once kids get to middle school -- parents are pretty much satisfied with report card grades.
Note: This is not to say that parents didn't sometimes complain about how a particular assignment or test was graded.
Well, when big city district administrators prioritize paperwork over teaching or classroom discipline, teachers will use whatever means are available to reduce the burden.
South Park did a whole episode on this last week. First students (boys) were using it to auto reply to their girlfriends’ text to keep on their good side. Some students were using it for their reports. One teacher began using it to grade students’ work. Wasn’t a funny episode but did highlight a problem going on today.
