I'm currently in my final year of college, and I am a semester away from starting my student teaching!
I'll have my bachelors degree in Elementary Education completed as well as certification in ESL, but I plan on getting certified soon.
I honestly want to teach in another state. I'm currently interested in either CA or NY, but I will be certified in TX.
I realize that the requirements vary from state to state. Some states do reciprocity, but others require a lot of work / prior experience. I also heard that it may be far more easier to find a job within a private school, but the salary would definitely be lower.
Has anyone ever relocated before their first year? Can anyone here offer any advice on what do?
I graduated from a PA school, accepted an early contract offer a month or two before graduation, and moved straight to VA. I don't remember it being difficult.
Moved from PA to MD. Had to take two more courses once I was hired, a Reading and a SPED class. This was a bit over 30 years ago. I don't know about now but PA sends new teachers here every year.
We seem to get a lot from PA and NY. We are a month in now and are still short handed.
Where in VA, are they short-handed and willing to take teachers from NY?
I would think it would be easiest to get an out of state job just after graduation. Each state has different requirements and now is the time when you can take whatever tests or classes that you would need with less difficulty. Plenty of people attend a college out of their home state and then return home to teach. NYC schools seem to have a preference for young people from another state for their hiring.

The Metro DC Counties in both MD and VA all tend to start the year with vacancies. There were a series of retrenchments a few years ago but there are now a lot of retirements happening due to us old guys not wanting to deal with R3T, Common Core and FfT. We just filled a SPED vacancy this past week and I think we have one more. We had a Math vacancy just go poof because they couldn't find anyone even minimally qualified to fill it so the vacancy just went away and the kids were divvied up among the rest of the department.
Your best chance for a job is in high need areas, Math, Science, Foreign Language, SPED and Library Science.

Yep. I'm in NoVA. We have had a substitute for an elementary special ed position since the start of school and just qualified for an additional general classroom position due to numbers. I've heard they will fill that spot with a sub until someone is hired. We also have two subs filling in for foreign language. At this time of year the applicant pickings are slim and the best candidates have been snatched up by now.
