So, have you started a conversation with 'how's your mama and them?' yet?
Now thats funny. Hope no one saw you.

You have to be careful with "hows your mama". I have done it and other people to me, ask and forget that their mother passed some years prior. Talk about wanting to crawl under a rock.

One that I got alot when I was young and met new older folks was "now who is your daddy" not to be confused with "whose yo daddy, whose yo daddy". People just have a need to know your family tree.

I think country is country, no matter where you are. My dad was born in the Bronx but ended up growing up on a farm in a secluded area of Ontario, Canada. I walked into the deli/general store about 14 years ago and the guy behind the counter wanted to know who my daddy was. He's just trying to place you in the scheme of things and then find out how the heck is everyone. Well, my dad hadn't been to high school there in 40 years but he remembered him. Knew other family that I had up there, too. Made a nice sandwich to take with me on my travels. I could taste the extra care in there.

When we first moved to Knox County, but up on the Anderson County line, I walked into a general store like that and everyone turned around and stared. It was pretty unnerving, even for an outgoing gal like myself. Well, it turns out that they were just trying to place me. You don't want to be snubbing Janet's long lost granddaughter, so everyone keeps wracking their brains. Turns out, we were just transplants and that was fine with them.

We have been here for 2 weeks so far; yankees from upstate NY. So far, we absolutly love it. In NY, people flashed the lights and gave us the finger because we have a "W" sticker on our car (the one who knew what it meant). Here, we get smiles and a thums up. In NY, we were considered out of touch with reality becuase we went to a christian church and were a "stay at home mom" family; here, half of our neighborhood is the same! In NY, we paid $10,000 a year in taxes for schools that were ranked lower than the school district we live in now and now only pay $3,000 a year! In NY, we gave 6% of our income to the state for what?!? Here, we are able to give more to the community because the State doesnt take it away! I really cant think of a single reason NOT to want to live in Tennessee. I think we found paradise!

Amen to this all. I am a Florida native, used to live in Southern CT, Now I live in Middle TN and I couldn't love it more. As soon as I got down to TN. I knew it was the place for me. The people are friendly and are willing to help. Hey, it isn't the Volunteer State for nothing. Tennessee is the true defenition of Southern Hospitality. I couldn't be happier. I love sitting on the porch with a glass of sweet tea and talking with our neighbor. Living in Tennessee, has made me a better person overall. I've learned to not rush through everything. To enjoy the simpler things in life. Thank you Tennessee and to the people of Tennessee that has made this state so great!

Glad all you newcomers are likin' it Had to lol @tennesseegirl95- with 'as soon as I got *DOWN* to Tennessee." My husband makes fun of me constantly for my lack of sense of direction when it comes to state location. I KNOW where they are, but the direction is irrelevant for me, apparently. When we lived in NM, Texas was 'come on down' now that we're back here, Florida is 'come on down'... perhaps I watched too much Price Is Right as a child....
