But bear in mind that, overall, TN has the 44th tax burden in the country. Only six states beat it, and they are not getting the bang for the buck that we get.

In Knoxville we have great trash pickup, good schools and fabulous parks and greenways. We also have excellent cops. That is to name a few great things. I think it costs us $60 per to register our vehicles, and we are one of the highest around because of the wheel tax in Knoxville. I think that most towns are $20 or $25.

Once again, Murfreesboro seems to stick out like a sore thumb. Bad drivers and bad weather. I know when I first looked into moving to TN I scratched off Murfreesboro from my list because it was the new "place" to be. Far too many transplants. That's what ruined Florida and I purposely wanted to stay away from that. It's also why I stayed away from NC. I can see that I was correct on both accounts. Nashville, too, for that matter.

By the way, Knoxville doesn't have an emissions test. Most counties in Tennessee do not.

Thank you. As a transplant who came here respecting the traditional culture, that's nice to hear. Unfortunately, many local Knoxvillians assume that all transplants are the same and thus disrespect all transplants. I'm here to say that not all transplants are the same. Give 'em a chance.

I've seen new people move here and then want to complain about our way of living and the way we do things.

New people come and then complain about us being so Conservative and "redneck".

New people come and then complain because Tennessee in predominately Christian and not afraid say it (not me).

New people come and then try to change us because they realize they don't fit into the "down-home country living" lifestyle they imagined.

We Tennesseans try our damnedest to go out of our way with our Southern hospitality but have mercy on us if we do it with a Dixie Tradition t-shirt on.

Our way of life was established decades ago by those "hillbillies" that you like to talk crap about.......If you don't like it - LEAVE!

To those who came here and respected our culture and way of life.....Bless you.
I was born in Ohio and quickly transplanted into South Florida where I lived till about age 10. We then moved to NW Fla, NJ and WV and then back to NW Fla when I was 17 yrs old. Since being married, we have lived in Connecticut and NC (Army), finally moving to Orlando in 1997.

I loved NJ because it was a "teens" paradise. I loved WV for the beauty and people. We hated Fayetteville NC, too many military haters and Orlando was going to be our final home....13 years later and we have had enough. English is not Florida's first language, spanish is. The gangs, the crime, the hate, the road rage, disrespectful kids who wear their pants at their ankles or the girls who put all their body business on front street for all the boys to google, people here in Orlando act like you owe them the world....For every 1 family that moves out, 5 move in and take what jobs there were. In addition to those reasons, one big reason for wanting to move to Tn is that my husband and I have been married 20+ years and we have never been home owners. We cant afford it here in Orlando and with 3 awesome kids, we want to give them the best, including a home that they can call their's.

We are looking forward to this big move and upcoming change. We will be bringing with us a high schooler (3rd yr honor roll), a freshman college student with military goals and my lil buddy who is 20 yrs old. He was born with a super rare chrom abnormality and he deserves better then these local "Orlando" nim-rods pointing their fingers in his face and calling him names. We're looking for a home and we believe Tn is the place for us.

I want to thank everyone who has so patiently answered my questions in the last couple weeks. It only solidifies that the decision is a good one and long coming.

Just remember that where you are moving to the schools may be underfunded and not what you expect. There could even be corporal punishment. Maybe not, though. Getting to a hospital might take you awhile. And there is not going to be many job opportunities. You are moving to a rather remote area and it will be different. Not necessarily bad but it may be very, very different than what you are expecting. Have you visited the area? The schools? Just want to make sure you know what you are getting, good and bad.

I use to live in Orlando and then swFlorida. I've also lived up north. I really, really like living in Knoxville but some of the very rural areas take some folks by surprise.

I dont think anything can be as remote as the area of WV I used to live, we lived in a one road hollar, no mail delivery and the entire town was a gas station, a post office, a church and an elementary school. lol

We are coming up to visit the area and make our purchase in person in 2 months. We have already gotten a lot of great information about the area's we are looking and so far, it all fits quite nicely.

Driving an hour or two to work is not a huge biggie, depending on the time of day, that is how long it can take to get home via I-4 even when your only 20 min from home. I would rather drive 2 hours of country driving then 1 hour of I-4 anyday! lol

Thank you for your imput, we def want this move to be successful and that is why I have been asking so many questions on here lately. We want to make sure it is a good fit and I believe our visit up will confirm our choice.

It was a culture shock for me when we moved straight from the hussle and bussle of Jersey where being a teen was "awesome" to the back woods of WV where I couldnt get a job because I didnt have kids to feed. (they hired based on employee's need for the job vs experience). WV (Matheny WV) was the first place that I decided to "make a mental memory", I remember swimming in the community pool (next town over, Oceana WV) and as my head emerged from the water I stood there staring at this amazing mountain that sat 1/4 mile away, it was huge and most beautiful. That mental memory has sat in my head for over 25 years and still something I will treasure for decades to come. However, as much as I loved WV's beauty, I too can not live there because it is too remote and unless you want to work in the coal mines, you will not be able to score a nice paying job.

well right now, ive never been to tn, planning on visiting in the spring, but ive been looking for a slow pace, friendly, rural area thats still close to basic conveniences, milder winters than new england, aslightly better growing zone while still close enough to CT to drive back to spend a few days.
lower cost of living, land...and did i mention southern hospitality.

all of that in an amazingly beautiful package...

everything im reading about eastern TN fits that package...

i do have a problem with people who move to a new area then complain it isnt like "home" and i HATE people that come to an area then try to change it...

if its not right for you thats fine, but why move away from your home town if it was so perfect?

i personally planning on just melding, blending in with "the locals"...

also i dont see why red-neck has to be such a bad dirty word...mabe its an american thing..but i have a great deal of respect for "red necks' because i was raised that a redneck is simply someone who works dang hard and enjoys their free time. no pretenses, no im better than you, no trying to outdoo the neighbors, just people who work hard (the term red neck came form farmers and cowboys who spent the day with the sun on their necks as far as i was always told) and want to sit on their porch or round a fire with a cold one and relax when ther not working
