That is exactly what I do. It takes a little longer, but it's a beautiful drive. Gorgeous mountain views all the way. You just have to learn how to slow down and smell the roses.

I am borned and raised in the hills of Tenn (Newport, TN.). I have lived all over the world since than, and for some reason the mountains of East Tenn have magnetically attracted me back to them.
I will tell you all that Newport is a hidden gem in the rough. Property values are soaring, but Newport has stayed somewhat on a small steady incline. Moderator cut: personal attacks are not necessary to get your message across I will tell you the positives of Newport and Cocke County.
Newport:
Top 20 elementary school in the state
City services beyond cost of taxes- Fire is an ISO rating of a 4, recycling and garbage collection free including pickup of large items and brush for free
city parks considered one of the cleaniest and best in the area
City Utilities one of the best in the state

Cocke County:
Property values less than 25% or more to compared counties, and I will tell you in the next 5 years this will not be true anymore.
Small town, but hospitatily beyond belief
One of the best rafting in east tenn
national parks beyond belief, around 20% of the county is a national park, actually the appalachian trail goes through Cocke County
3 diferent large cities less than an hour away
One of the most visited tourist attractions in the east less than 30 minutes away, including the largest outlet shopping in the world.

So if you are looking to retire, raise a family, or just vacate, where could you go wrong. One thing we dont have is a nightlife unless you want it under the stars. Come to Newport, TN. You get what you expect and a whole lot more.
