Talking Dale Hollow

Just wandering if there is anyone on this board from the Dale Hollow area? Which county offers the best schools? I would like to live on the water so how far to these schools?

Thanks

I know people who taught in school systems around Dale Hollow, they all loved it. Very respectful students, wonderful community support. I don't know that any system is better than another academically. They're all ok, but nothing to brag about. It's a very poor region.

Overton County's system would probably offer a little more, only because it's the largest. Pickett County is the smallest county in the state and has a miniscule high school. Some people like that sort of thing (very Mayberry-ish). Clay County is a tad bigger than Pickett County but not by much.

I know of people who live in those counties but commute to Cookeville for work and send their kids to Putnam County schools. They're not supposed to send their kids to Putnam County schools, but the school system there turns a blind eye to that practice unless it starts to overcrowd the schools.

Dale Hollow is my favorite lake in Tennessee, so I hope you'll be able to make the move! It's an incredibly beautiful area.

Thankyou for your response, I am looking for a local to answer all my ridiculous questions as they come to me. We are planninng a scout trip to the D.H.L. area in July. Another question I have is how difficult would it be for my wife to get a teaching job? She is a certified math teacher of 12 years here in N.W. Florida. Do you have a contact # or name for someone directly involved with school system?
The area we are from was very unpopulated and economically depressed for years( and I was happy), but now due to the urban sprawl we are now sufficating. You can due a census on Santa Rosa County in Florida for the last 10 years and see exactly what I am talking about.
once again thanks for your help.

Can't help you with the schools. I have property at the lake. Maybe if you have specific questions I can answer them.

I would have to agree with JMT that Overton Co would probably be a better choice as far as schools. Also Fentress County has a very nice education system. Test scores are always above average. I will Private message you with some phone #s.

Gary and Micki,
Thank you for your response. Micki unfortunately we will not be able to make the move for the upcoming school year. How I wish we could though. I would greatly appreciate some contact #'s for reference.

Gary where is your place on the lake? Which county? Why did you choose Dale Hollow? What are your likes and dislikes so far?

Thankyou both and look forward to your response.

The school systems are tiny, so job openings are pretty scarce, particularly in Pickett and Clay counties. But they do have web sites! Keep checking their web sites for job openings. Good luck to you.

I'm in Pickett county,Byrdstown is the closest town. I've vacationed @ Dale Hollow for over 30 years.Bought property in 90. It's nothing like it use to be,it's much more commercialized now. The holiday weekends are extremely crowded. Parts of the lake even get muddy now from all the boat waves. But overall it's still a great place. Theres only so many marinas and boat ramps and no room to expand so it does get congested in the peak season. If you need to work I would look closer to Livingston or Cookeville. If your planning a trip and need a place to stay, then go to the Sportsmans lodge on 111 just south of Byrdstown, it's very reasonable and clean. Tom Thompson is the owner. If in Byrdstown the best place to eat is the Bobcat on 111. I avoid the marina restaurants as they have really went down hill over the years. If you give more details on exactly what your looking for I will be able to help more

Gary,

We would like to be within a 1/2 mile or so of one of the marinas just for the convinence of keeping the boat in the water and being able to ride bikes to the marina. Of course which marina would depend on available schools and work.
Do you believe Dale Hollow to still be the best lake as far as water quality and population on any given day? We enjoy the water and our privacy so small towns on beautiful lakes are up our alley.

Thanks for all your help

TURFNSCAPE,

Most people that see Dale Hollow for the first time fall in love with it, they haven't seen all the changes over the years that I have. I would still rank it as one of the best in Tn.It's just nothing like it use to be. I also go to Cordell Hull just south west of Dale Hollow and to Norris Lake north of Knoxville. All three are great places. If you really want privacy Cordell Hull would be the one. It's more like Dale Hollow was 20 years ago.
It will be difficult to find a place within 1/2 mile of a marina on Dale Hollow, and if you do you will pay a premium. The easiest Marina to get to by road is the Sunset marina just south of Byrdstown, it's right on 111 by the bridge. All the other marinas are off the main roads.

How old are you? And what do you like to do in the off season? Theres very little to do in the off season.Where do you live now? How big is your boat?
