LaFollette, TN
Could someone give us info on LaFollette, Tennessee - what does the town have to offer (and is it friendly!), points of interest and recreation? We currently live in California, love to travel, and we're looking for a nice spot to settle into. Thanks!

I bet you are pronouncing it wrong, too. When you come to visit, make sure you put on one of the local TV channels to hear the local commercials/local news shows so you can hear how the names of some of the area towns are pronounced. LaFollette is one of the places I had all wrong.
Photos
If you go to the Google homepage, click on the Images link. It will bring you to the homepage to search Google Images. Type in-- LaFollette TN (no commas). Click on any of the images that come up for a chance to see them bigger. (When the next page comes up, you'll see "see full-size image" at the top of the page. Click on it.)
What's In the Town
Now go to yellow.com. The zip code for LaFollette is 37766. On the yellow.com homepage where it says Business Category type in -- stores. In the location box, type in the zip code. Then click on Search. It will allow you to refine your search to the type of store (clothing, convenience, department, grocery and supermarket, furniture, etc.) you seek by clicking on a link. Click on the link of your choice. Scroll down passing the Sponsored Results untill you get to All Listings to see the stores in LaFollette in thae category of store you picked. You can do the same yellow pages search for things like restaurants, physicians, automobile, etc.
you might want to go to the City Data page for LaFollette and scroll down:
http://www.city-data.com/city/La-Fol...Tennessee.html
Here is the LaFollette newspaper website:
LaFollette Press (broken link)
There's info about 4th of July events on the one that's up there now.
The county (Campbell) has Cove Lake and Indian Mountain State Parks
TN State Parks: Indian Mountain State Park
TN State Parks: Cove Lake State Park
There appears to be a low level of educational attainment in LaFollette (compared to the rest of TN) which may or may not impact things like money allocated to a library, for example, or classes for seniors, for example.
You can request a brochure from the county:
Info Request
In case you don't decide on LaFollette, the Google Images search for photos, the Yellow Pages search (for what's in the town) and the hometown newspaper are 3 good sources of info for any town in addition to the City Data page for a particular town.
This page is also good for State Parks:
TN State Parks: Find A Park
It divides the parks up by West, East and Middle Tennessee. Then click on the particular park to find out more about it.
This is a good place to find out what's going on in Tennessee:
Tennessee Vacation - The State's Official Travel Planning Website
It's made for tourists but the best feature (in my opinion) is the schedule of events. See that little map on the upper left hand side of the page. Click on East, Middle or West. It brings up a calendar for the current month. Click on the month (July) and it will tell you what's going on and where. Click on the event for more detail. (Fourth of July events are prominently featured this month.)
A LaFollette resident can talk better about the people.

I lived in LaFollette for about 6 years and hated it! I am a city girl and I found it very very hard to fit into this small southern town. It seems like if you are an outsider then it is hard to make friends and sometimes even find work. I would suggest maybe a bigger city such as Knoxville.

what is in Lafollette? Banks, fast food restaurants.. this is because they have a liquor law so really none of your chain restaurants, gas stations (which is about $.10 higher than Knoxville on average), churches, small mall with small stores, grocery stores, and some local businesses, There are some major chains such as Blockbuster Video, Walmart, Goody's, etc... For recreation you can fish or 4 wheel, garden... I am not trying to be negative but it is a small town and the people there are friendly but that is about as far as the niceness went.

I believe quite a bit of the pricey Norris Lake area has a LaFollette address, FWIW.

About La Follette
I noticed that this posting was made in June, so I am not sure if your family has relocated or not already. My husband and I are from Seattle and then moved to Portland, Oregon. We are expecting our first child and relocated to La Follette TN to be closer to family. Here are our thoughts on La Follette. It is a retirement town, so if you are retired, it is a great spot full of golfing, small recreation, and lake access. If you have a family with children, it is not the best area. The schools here are not good, it has a high meth production population, and there is nothing for kids to do around here except go to the movies (which is nice, because it is only $2.50). The area is strange in the sense that there are really wealthy people here, and really poor people here...it is pretty drastic. It is about 1hour from Knoxville (the main city) so it is hard to get into town becuase of the long haul. If you are a city person and need to be in the times with society, live closer to Knoxville, this small town is a little behind the times. The one good thing about the area is that housing is cheap, and there are a few areas to go hiking. We are actually leaving La Follette in May of this year to move to Franklin, TN near Nashville. We like that area a lot, and the town is really famliy friendly. Good luck with your transition!

I also lived there for about six years, and i experienced the schools first hand. It is a nice sleepy town, an old coal mining town. It has grown a lot since I left though. Hope you enjoy the visit. I am thinking of moving back there now that I have a family of my own, just cause it's a lot slower there it seems.
