I like your world skinem.

I read a story 110 yrs. ago about a group of pioneers settling near Indian territory. They were all consumed with fear of being attacked and were diligent in locking down the doors and windows. Sure enough a band of Indians slipped in and attacked. They murdered and destroyed all the homes except one. The only one that left their windows open and doors unlocked.

Some people choose to be afraid, no matter where they live.

But I think we've sufficiently answered the OP's question. Most of us live in nice areas and sleep with the windows open.

There is no place I would sleep with my downstairs windows open at night.

That may be because you now live in Memphis.

I live 30 minutes outside of Memphis and we've always slept with our windows open when it's nice outside.

Actually it would not make any difference where I lived. I have lived in Nashville, Knoxville, Maryville, Athens, Cleveland, Chattanooga, and small towns in West Tn.

No place is safe enough for me to endanger my family, I have family in law enforcement in many areas of TN, no area is immune to crime.

I see no reason to invite it in. If others wish to take the risk, that is there personal choice, not for me though. I am not afraid, I sleep great at night, but I am totally aware of the crime in all parts of TN.

Maybe for some ignorance is bliss. There is no police officer that will not tell you that criminals look for an easy mark. They want a dark house with easy access.

---some people choose to be afraid--

I'm not afraid of tornados..............but I carry wind insurance on my farm buildings

I'm not afraid of fires....................but I carry fire insurance on my farm buildings

I'm not afraid of hail or drought.....but I carry insurance on my crops

I'm not afraid of thieves..............but I lock my door at night

I don't feel the need to bypass common sense and common precautions just to prove how " macho" I am.

Seems many need to, however.

I don't have to go back 110 yrs

I'll tell you about what happened 6 years ago.

My cousin and her teen son and daughter lived in a central Minnesota town of 3,000. Very safe town.
She never locked her doors at night.

One night 2 thugs from Minneapolis drove to that town to rob a relative of theirs house but couldn't locate it.

They then decided ( late night) to rob a random house. The first 3 they tried had locked doors. The 4th house was my cousins.

End result was 1 rape and 3 attacks with a sledge hammer.
Culminating with 3 people dying from their throats slashed.

I attended the funerals with the 3 caskets.

Amongst the big crowd attending, were the 3 neighbors( who despite living in a safe community) locked their doors
