Post Cookeville, New rules — but no ban — for fireworks

COOKEVILLE -- While several other counties in Middle Tennessee have canceled firework shows for the Fourth of July, no such ban is being planned in Putnam County, and those expecting to buy fireworks for private shows will have to follow new state regulations starting today.
Cookeville Fire Chief John Kendrick said that the decision not to institute a fireworks ban came after discussions with the city manager, city attorney and council members.

"We do encourage individuals to pay close attention to where they're shooting fireworks off, be conscious of their surroundings and not shoot in areas that are extremely dry," Kendrick said.

Rainfall that fell in the area on Friday is expected to lessen the threat of having small brush fires created by fireworks, and Kendrick said he only recalls one time within the city where a small grass fire was caused from fireworks, but that was about 15 years ago.
