Yes, most places we went we were the 'minority, but never did we feel out of place or threatened. Most of the blacks we saw seemed to be family people, nicely dressed and nice cars, and very friendly. The neighborhoods we saw north and south of the Hospital area were a mixture of older and newer homes and apt/condo styles, pretty well cared for.
WOW !!!!!!! dont we sound a bit prejudice......... It seems you see people for the color of their skin instead of "who" they are.... I guess since we are "family" people that makes us "safe". Let me just throw this at you.... most the National Headline News Violent Crimes is committed by "whites".

Did you notice the asian and hispanic culture in Jackson ?? Funny....

Can you provide statistics and citations for your assertion regarding "most the National Headline News Violent Crimes is committed by 'whites'"? It's such a stupid, nonsensical statement that I just have to see your references.

And no, you won't notice the "asian and hispanic culture in Jackson" because those groups make up a tiny fraction of the population.

Jackson's diversity is strictly, starkly black and white. There are great people there of both races. I think that's all the guy who posted before you was saying. Then you go and get all hot and bothered. Take a breath, learn to read, and get a life.

Although those of us who are in Jackson everyday may notice the small influx of Hispanics that have come to the area lately, it is a very small number. Especially if someone moved here from places like Texas, California or southern Florida. I am in Jackson everyday and I have never been a crime victim. Jackson,Tennessee is your average, everyday, run of the mill, mid sized city. No better or worse than any other mid sized city.

Coming from NYC, when we visited, and stayed 3 days in Jackson, I fell in love. We bought our house south of Henderson, almost in Selmer, sight unseen - well, not seen with our eyes in person. So after the closing, we went to take a look at what we'd bought. First, I have to tell you we were astounded and pleased with Jackson. I expected a tiny place and it isn't - it has everything there is to have - bookstores, nice restaurants, a decent sized hospital, a bunch of colleges, nice neighborhoods (and some not nice), some crazy traffic we didn't expect along the bypass near I-40, but nothing we couldn't handle - we are in NYC, after all.

We were pleased. Small enough without being too small to have the conveniences we wanted. I'm just bummed that our retirement date has been put off for another year.

City Crime Rankings by Population Group

Go to the bottom and look at number 9 on the dangerous. I can see why Jackson is considered dangerous compared to other smaller cities around. I have visited there all my life and never had any problems. There are a lot of nice areas in Jackson just like everywhere else.

I wouldn't count out Jackson as a place to raise a family. I know it has some trouble spots, but you can find people here who really care about making Jackson a great place to live. Midtown and Downtown areas are beginning to go full force into a revitalization program. The farmer's market is a great place to visit and see your friends on a Saturday morning. Also new and energized interest is being placed on the public school system. I see some exciting, positive things developing in the next few years.

Sometimes statistics are good but sometimes they arent always accurate. You can get several different stats on search engines. Thats what I do when researching something, always look for other engines with statistics and see what they say. There is NO CITY ON EARTH where crime rates, weather conditions, schools, are not going to be issues of some sort. I was researching top 25 cities for worst crimes just the other night, on 3 different engines.
You might also consider visiting there a couple of times before making a decision, maybe live in another nearby town?

If you move to Jackson for work, commute from Medina or elsewhere. I have lived in Jackson or the county just out of the city for 40 years and I am trying to relocate my family somewhere better, ie; safer.

thank goodness you have had your priorities in order. to the other poster who gave the information about statistics, search engines, etc., i had a relative murdered in nashville, so i guess i should move to madison, nolensville road, boredeux, or antioch. and, if you have ever watched the "snapped" program aired on t.v. weekly, you will have seen the 4 or 5 grizzly murder cases profiled on the show, as well as those in nashville. again, should you move in and observe the violence from afar?

jackson seems to be a decent place and decent people, of those i have met. however, i choose friends carefully and wisely, as well as acquaintances. regardless of where go for entertainment, work, or rountine activities, you should always be aware of your surroundings and your vulnerability.

I am considering a home in the Oil Well road, Old Humboldt Road area. From the maps, it looks as though it will be a nice safe area and easy to get to a few stores such as Target and WalMart. I am from a real small town out west and not accustomed to a lot of crazy drivers and wonder if I should reconsider my choice. I was told about some property around Stantonville and Selmer... anyone have any advice??
