A couple of questions first . . .
When are you coming?
Do you prefer the mountain and mountain streams, or camping around lakes, or does it matter if there's neither?
There are bears in East Tennessee, but they're Black Bears, so not particularly dangerous. They just care about food (and humans aren't that tasty to them). Any camping area you're likely to go to has information on what you need to do, or not do, to avoid a confrontation with a hungry bear.

I just came back from a week of camping at the KOA in Newport. I was quite suprised that no mosquitos or any bugs bothered me at all and i'm usually a magnet for them. We were told wildlife was around to clean up outside and don't leave trash behind. we did see some deer but no bear though i'm told they have been spotted. Temps at night were in the mid 60's. it was so comfortable. We had a travel trailer but there were pop ups as well that we saw.

Bears of Michigan and Wisconsin
Are you kidding? I mean, I don't mean to be rude but you think it is not safe to camp in Tennessee? You think you would need to upgrade? Gosh, I guess that when I camp in my tent I'm lucky to be alive.
Are you from the city? That would explain the questions. Because there is just as much wildlife in Michigan.

Don't forget the sticks with bells on them to scare of bears I think I would be more concerned about snakes than bears, is that about right y'all? I know in NC we had tons of copperheads... I rather face a bear thank you!

Yeah, and don't watch Deliverance before you come.

Depends on where you want to go. I camp & backpack in East TN. When we were at Paint Creek in Greene County one time I saw a black bear but it was frightened by us. Usually not a threat unless you surprise them.
Here is a good list of all the different areas. Most all your mountain areas are going to be in East Tennessee.

We have visited Gatlinburg before, we rented a cabin, very nice. But we like it all or want to see it all anyway so I am trying to get ideas...we are trying to see if a motorhome would be a good investment for us down the road. We do enjoy water, so lakes would be nice as well as the mountains and streams...we have no plans as of yet, just getting ideas...thanks for your input...

We used to tent all the time and upgraded to a 30' travel trailer just last year. skipped the pop-up because the travel trailer we got wasn't much more than a pop up costs. It's ready to go anytime we are. All we need is to put our clothes in it and we're off. It's also nice on long trips to pull off and take a snooze or cook a meal as you can't do that with a pop up. We've only camped once in TN this past week and it was at a KOA but keep in mind of the hills you'll have to go over if you do buy something bigger that needs to be towed. Make sure your truck can handle it.
