I remember a case in the newspaper a few years ago about a woman living in Bristol TN who bought some furniture in Bristol VA. (The town is on the border of VA and TN). She paid the VA tax but not the TN tax and did not file the purchase on her tax return. The TN authorities locked her up.
I never did hear how the case turned out.

I believe this whole internet tax things amounts to a bunch of politicians trying to increase their state's revenues with no regard to the citizens. All states should have a reciprocal agreement on sales tax. By that I mean that if you live in TN and buy anything in another state you should only be responsible of the sales tax in the state where the purchase took place. If a person living in NC buys an item over the internet from TN then they should be charged the TN sales tax and not the NC tax.
The second issue with internet sales is shipping charges. If a customer has to pay both state sales tax and shipping charges then that would cut down on sales. One might think that would be good for local business. However, the problem that arises is that in many rural location many items are not available.
